    Hangs At Kubuntu Screen sometimes...

I have noticed with Lucid that it will sometimes hang at the kubuntu plash screen.

If I boot safe mode and hit resume it will say checking battery state...

If I reboot with the ac adapter unplugged and boot from battery it will usually boot fine to the login. Is this a common thing for any one else?

Something is hanging your system (obviously).

Next time it happens - note the time. Once you're back in your system, review all your log files and see what event or action is causing the hang.

What/How do I check "the logs"?

The first log to check would be dmesg. In a console you can type:
          Code:
          sudo dmesg
Look at the last 50 or so lines and see if you see anything that might be significant.

All your logs file are kept in /var/log and various subdirectories. The primary ones to read through are messages, syslog, kern, and Xorg.0.log.

dmesg hits all the highlights. If nothing shows up there - start sifting through the others.

The time and date are important because it can help you pinpoint exactly what caused your issue.

are you talking on boot or on shutdown , cause my box will sometimes hang on shutdown, its very annoying and i have to either RESIUB to shut it down or some times the kernel is already out so i have to hold my power button. , i have noticed if i use the command 'shutdown -P now' it will shut down with no problems. i suspect the Video driver since mine and my friends both do it and we both have ATI 4000HD series cards. do you also happen to have an ati card.?

i have only see it on boot after i was messing around w/ my /etc/modules (trying to get my capture card to load the correct card version for the saa7134 driver...) and it was a result of modprobe being confused on what to do w/ that card that was causing the hang.

The scenario usually is I'll wake up in the morning/evening with the laptop plugged in and fully charged. I will press the power button to turn it on. It will boot to the Kubuntu splash screen then just sit there. If I unplug the ac power and hit Ctrl Alt Del to reboot, it will boot just fine to the login screen.

Doesn't alway happen that way... I'll have to check the log when I get a chance.

If you haven't already done this, remove the quiet splash kernel options so that you can see the boot up messages. If/when you get the 'hang' the last message might provide a clue as to what is happening.

I have the same problem, my fix was hit power down button and then boot would continue fine.

                          Grub 2 Basics

Scroll down to /etc/default/grub and then read about the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" entry in this file.

When I did the sudo dsmeg.... there seems to be some mentions of acpi errors and some thing about the ac detection.

How does one read the time because all I see are numbers in brackets ie [10.900775]

It sounds to me like you're getting acpi errors.

Do a web search on your model computer and "linux" to see if anyone else has had the same issues.

There are kernel parameters you can use that can help.

FIRST: Go to your computer manufacturers website and see if there is a BIOS update availabe (I had a simliar issue and a BIOS update fixed it).

Once you're sure your BIOS is up to date, try adding some boot options (put them where SnowHog said to edit). Here's a link to some you can try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bo...Boot%20Options
