Re: Emerald
I do
emerald requires compiz - you can't run it under kwin.
1. Install compiz compiz-kde, compizconfig-settings-manager, whatever compiz plugins you like and emerald.
2. in system settings --> personal -> default applications change your window manager from kwin to compiz.
3. From a terminal window or a run dialog, do
emerald --replace &
All done!we see things not as they are, but as we are.

For some reason skydome and cube caps broke with the last set of upgrades but that'll get fixed soon.

Re: Emerald
Back 'in the day' - before KDE 4 - I used Compiz. I haven't used it since KDE 4 came along and matured (KDE 4.4.3 here), and native Desktop Effects were included.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
