SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

I searched the forums for this, found some hints on permissions and other plugins that needs to be installed, but this is not the case here. Burning CD/DVD works fine, permissions are correct. Also Ripping with the default ogg vorbis plugin works fine.

Whenever I try to rip a CD to mp3 using the lame plugin, k3b freezes at the end of the last track. All ripped tracks except the last one are ok. It gets even worse, if I change the bitrate for the lame plugin. When set to --preset extreme, k3b simply freezes just _before_ ripping the CD. No errors are reported either in the logfiles or starting k3b in a terminal. It looks like the process communication between k3b and lame is broken.

Here is a link to a post that has similar problems using the Flac Plugin.

I would be grateful for any hints or pointers

Re: SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

After a lot of attempts to solve this issue including using another drive I came to the conclusion that k3b cannot be used to rip CDs, at least for me.

I now use Audex for ripping my CD's, this works really fine.

      hi.

i have been away for the last 6 months.
i upgraded my 2 systems to lynx only just recently.

my sony vaio (vgn-sr29xn) at home doesn't rip into mp3 with lame anymore.
it just freezes as soon as it starts ripping.
no problems ripping into .wav and then converting to .mp3 with lame from command line.

my dell precision (m65) at work has issues as well.
it rips all the tracks, only freezing after the last one.

      so much for now...

      cheers.

      ps:
i've been using k3b for ripping for years and never had any troubles.
using a different application is not an option for me.
i'd like to have this fixed in k3b.
      investigating...

Re: SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

This week, wanting to create an Audio CD with some mp3 files I found that K3b wouldn't let me drag and drop the files into burn folder because it couldn't "handle" the format. I installed a bunch of codec files from the repository, including ffmpeg, libmp3lame0, mp3gain, oggconvert and others that I found searching for "mp3" in the repository, and then K3b would accept mp3 files again.

It happens that I just installed the 16 DEC daily build of Natty on a VM. As an exercise (to check GG's story), I just did the following:

          Code:
          sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
          Code:
          sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras
          Code:
          sudo apt-get install ffmpeg libmp3lame0 mp3gain oggconvert
ffmpeg was already installed. The others came in as requested.

K3b is presently ripping to mp3 format. GG is right (as usual).

Re: SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

My Sony always burned mp3 files. It was my wife's Acer Aspire One A0521-3782 that couldn't. When I decided to switch from Ubuntu's netbook edition to KDE4 desktop I installed the kubutnu-plasma-desktop by accident. It installed a "minimal" KDE desktop, which did not include Konsole, K3b and several apps. When I installed K3b it did not come with mp3 burning, so I went on the codec hunt and discovered by adding and testing until K3b would burn. Had I installed kubuntu-desktop instead I would not have encountered the problem (and wouldn't have known that a minimal install minimalizes K3b as well).

              wife's vaio still not ripping...

              @dibl:
i had everything installed alread, apart from oggconvert

              @GreyGeek
indeed my intial system was installed all the way up from kde-minimal.
but i installed kubuntu-desktop before applying the system upgrade.

              still stuck, i'm afraid.
ripping into .wav gives no issues whatsoever.
ripping into .mp3 freezes the whole k3b.

system log has a few messages i don't like:
              ...

              ...
they don't seem to be related to the ripping itself.
'cause even after seeing these, i can rip into .wav alright.

Re: SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

It looks as if you might have a built-in DRM system nixing your attempts to burn mp3's.

Re: SOLVED: K3b freezes when ripping CD with lame

                      upgrading to 10.10 helped.

                      k3b doesn't just freeze anymore.
it spits out an error message about my lame line in the plugin settings.

my old line has always been, and was:
                      Code:
                      lame -V 0 --ta %a --ty %y --tl %m --tn %n --tt %t - %f
                      k3b doesn't like that anymore.
                      reduced it to simply:
                      Code:
                      lame -V 0 - %f
                      and problem solved!

                      cheers everybody
