NOT RESOLVED: Firefox java plugin problem in 10.04

This problem is BACK. See my post of 9 Aug 2010.
    ------------------------------

I cannot get the Firefox java plugin to work. I have installed the sun-java6-jre and it works (Jalbum).

I have installed sun-java6-plugin and something called icedtea6-plugin. Maybe that last was a mistake, as it seems to be based on OpenJDK, whatever that is.

Anyway, every time I get to a java page, such as for uploading pictures to mypix.com, it says I am missing a plugin: Icedtea. When I try to install it, it crashes Firefox.

Typing aboutlugins shows that I have IcedTea NPR Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea6 1.8 (6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1)). Nothing resembling java is shown.

    What to do? Help, please.

I always ... sweat blood getting Firefox plugins to work!

You need to install medibuntu repo and then java plug-in 1.6.0_20. But first remove all the openjdk and iced tea stuff. While you're at it you probabley want to install gecko windows media player plug-in. Vlc dont work so good.

Hey, that did it! As a matter of fact, as soon as I had removed IcedTea (no substitute for java, anyway...), Java showed up in aboutlugins. Now it works just fine.

      Thanks a 10**6!

For the moment, I have no problem at all with vlc. In fact, it can play all sorts of stuff that Amarok will not.

Thats been my experience with VLC. But yesterday found that it would not play some streaming audio during the nascar race. Gecko did the trick. I keep them both in Firefox plugins enabling and disabling as need be.

Re: NOT RESOLVED: Firefox java plugin problem in 10.04

I have had to reinstall my system (new computer) and I am once again sweating blood to get the java plugin to work for uploading photos to Mypix or Facebook.

I have looked on medibuntu.org and the list of software for Lucid does not include anything java or any plugins. I have installed sun-java6-plugin.

Curiously enough, the photo upload applet or whatever it is works with Chrome for mypix.com, but not for Facebook or for photoways.com. I certainly do NOT at all have an inkling as to why. Are they really different applications?

In my opinion, the absolute WORST thing about reinstalling Kubuntu is ALWAYS getting the %^&*( Firefox plugins to work.

Thanks in advance for much needed advice.

            Huh?

            In the paragraph entitled "

            here you can see

Hi, dibl. I don't know what page you are on, but I do not find a paragraph "installation" on

              https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

or on the list of packages at

              http://packages.medibuntu.org/

nor do I find java or plugin in the list for lucid at

              http://packages.medibuntu.org/lucid/index.html

              So where should I be?

Sun's java packages are not (and to my knowledge, have never been) available from medibuntu repositories.

They are currently available from the the ubuntu partner repository (which you may need to enable):
                line for sources.list:
                deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ lucid partner

I just checked. I already have the partner repository. Plus

If, when installing, you never saw the EULA - which you must accept - then java isn't really installed. Well, it is, but without the EULA acknowledgement, the license isn't activated, and so, java won't run.

I'm pretty sure I accepted it. In any case, java seems to work:

                      $ java -version
                      java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode)

Also, Jalbum works and it is entirely in Java. I do not understand a thing.

So, is your issue solved or not solved? I'm confused. Within your last two posts, you indicate that it is not working and it is working. Which is it?

Sorry if I was not clear. Java works, with Jalbum, for instance. The Firefox plugin does not work with Facebook or Mypix.

If you load aboutlugins in the browser, do you see any mention of java?

I see this (along with many others)

I see the same thing except that it is
