      It wants me to update to version 21. Is this really necessary? I have version 20. I can't believe they are that different.

      That said, which is the better method: RPM or self-extracting file? And where to put it? Currently,

      $ type java
      java is /usr/bin/java
      $ ls -l /usr/bin/java
      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2010-07-02 16:28 /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java
      $ ls -l /etc/alternatives/java
      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2010-07-02 16:28 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

      I mean, this is a crummy mess, with a link to a link to a link. This is what curls my few (ok, two) remaining hairs every time I have to do this.

      Suggestions? And thanks again.

        If it works on that page then it means that java is installed correctly. Your problems with Facebook or Mypix have nothing to do with java.
