    oem-config-kde hangs

I am writing this from my Lucid Lynx LiveUSB stick which, thankfully, I created yesterday!

This afternoon I read about oem-config and oem-config-kde and decided to use it to create a backup of my system.

The process got to "Setting up users ..." at 34% and hung there.

There is NO option to cancel the process.

I cannot open a console and gain control.

All I can do is hit the power button and shut down, but booting up restarts the process.

Booting into the console recovery screen brings it up, but none of the options are honored. The oem-config process over rides any recovery screen setting and starts all over and hangs again at 34%.

I have used the LiveUSB to examine my HD installation and see where the oem-config process starts up but I do not see anything in /boot/grub, /etc/init.d, /etc/rc.local, /etc/profile, etc...

Anyone know how to kill the oem-config startup sequence so I can regain control?
    (I sure miss inittab )

    Installed files for:

    oem-config:
    /etc/init.d/oem-config
    /etc/init/oem-config.conf
    /usr/lib/oem-config/post-install/ubi-reload-keyboard
    /usr/lib/ubiquity/debian-installer-utils/register-module.post-base-installer-oem
    /usr/lib/ubiquity/tzsetup/post-base-installer-oem
    /usr/sbin/oem-config
    /usr/sbin/oem-config-firstboot
    /usr/sbin/oem-config-prepare
    /usr/sbin/oem-config-remove
    /usr/sbin/oem-config-wrapper

    oem-config-kde:
/usr/share/ubiquity/desktop/oem-config-prepare-kde.desktop (likely not going to be helpful)

Ya, I found "locate"ed those files (locate bin/oem) and started reading the scripts.

      In this script:
      /usr/sbin/oem-config-firstboot
was a line which would have been run IF the script had completed the creation of a remaster.
      It removed /var/log/oem-config/run

When I removed that and rebooted it gave me a console instead of KDE4, so I used "sudo service kdm start" to start KDE4 up and here I am. Now I have to clean up my system before I go to bed...

I found only 78 entries in a google search for "oem-config hangs" and none helped, which is why I started reading scripts.

      Thanks anyway, Snowhog!

          As an aside...

My system is not from a fresh install of the Gold release. I started with Alpha 1 and continually upgraded. My system still shows the Ubuntu boot splash screen, unlike the gold release. I've seen other ways in which there are small differences between an upgrade and a fresh install. This oem-config hang on setting up the user may be another one.

I'm tempted to do a fresh install just for giggles and grins.
