Kontact "freezes" after starting up, separate applications work.

I have explained my problems in detail here

    http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=86861

as it started after one of the KDE upgrades (the monthly).

I like Kontact a lot and decided to switch totally away from Thunderbird. But I have not been able to use it much lately due to the problems with it freezing after starting up.

There is a lot of disk activity (I have a good number of mails in the system and about 1600 contacts...) and I am able to click a couple of places before it all settles down and do not respond any more. I can minimize and maximize the app, but nothing inside the window responds. And yes, I have left it for a while to see if it came alive again.

Are there any experts on Kontact/Mail/Akonadi/MySQL out there that can give me some pointers on where to begin to search for the problem?

Please read the thread above first. It is obvious there that I have a MySQL problem that needs to be fixed. I will start there for now. Have not had much time lately to fix these problems as I have had a lot of work to do and I had a workaround that kinda did the job (running mail as a separate app). But I really need the whole system to work again...

I have the same problem... also upgraded from Jaunty (64bit).

When I have Akonadi and Nepomuk running, Kontact always freezes, as described by Oceanwacher, but when I kill Nepomuk, it seems to be fine and everything works... also the Akonadi-resources in Kontact...

But I have a general question: all this Akonadi, Nepomuk etc. business has been going on for a while and with every distribution I struggle to get this to work, just so that my system works as it is "supposed" to be.
I never got it fully working. I always have errors in Akonadi and something is giving me trouble.
(Although this is the first time that it seems to be possible to use Akonadi resources.)

Excuse my ignorance, but with all this trouble I actually don't even know what Akonadi is good for... the old system seems to work fine... why does KDE 4 come with a system that doesn't work / is not ready yet? I don't seem to be the only one having trouble with Akonadi and friends... does this whole framework make any difference to the end-user or is it mostly a internal technology?

I have to correct my statement... when I use Akonadi, even without Nepomuk, Kontact freezes as soon as I try to change anything in my calendar... so it does not work at all!
I had to revert back to standard KDE resources, without Akonadi... and for some strange reason my address book, which previously insisted on using Akonadi, is now back to normal...

So same as last time I upgraded: lot's of trouble with Akonadi, only to abandon it in the end and go back to the old resources...
