You can try turning transparency off and see if that fixes it.
Did I mention I'm still referring to my 8.04 Hardy system? I keep transparency disabled. Also It makes a difference whether or not the Konsole window is maximized. Maximized Konsole windows have many more columns on my widescreen display, so that explains why there would be some slowdown. But even with the Konsole window sized to 80 columns of text I still experience a noticeable and annoying slowdown when the buffer scrolls.

I really enjoyed reading this thread! I haven't seen a somewhat negative RANT spawn such good conversation and helping in while and no one bashed the other hard. Just nudged. Truthfully, my first system was a C64 so it's nice to see others here that have had a similar start as I.

Surely you must recognize my user name and avatar then

I really miss my C64 right now

I do miss those Sprites. I love VICE! Brings back the memories. Temple of Apshi was my favorite along with M.U.L.E.!

Both great games! I also like Temple of Apshai Trilogy which included updated graphics and sound as well as the sequel games all on one disk.

Have you enabled subpixel smoothing? systemsettings > Appearance >Fonts, set "Use anti-aliasing" to "Enabled" and click on "Configure". Place a checkmark next to "Use subpixel rendering", select "Slight" as hinting style, click on "OK" and then on "Apply".
Thank you, I was looking for that and forgot where to find it. That sure took care of the "cut up" letters. However, my fonts still suck. Does anyone have any suggestions on fonts that are easier to read so I don't have to waist my time going through every one I can find? All mine are set to San Serif.

I have set all my fonts to "Lucida Grande", it's great!
I don't know if it's ok to link it here... Just do a web search, and you'll quickly find a download.

                      sudo apt-get install vice

Thanks zlow, but I already have VICE compiled from source. Problem is that I really miss the C64 itself in a way that emulators can't replace.

I'm with you there. I have been a C64 fan since it was announced in the 80s, and I know full well that emulation isn't exactly the same. I finally parted with mine just a few years ago.

I agree with that. I actually still have it but it is dead.

If Lucid is not ready, I don't think any other distro ever will be and neither will desktop Linux.

                                Indeed.

I'm running KDE 4.5 on 10.04 here and even some bleeding edge software like the xorg-edgers and Maverick kernel (for my magic mouse, and nog, I have no mac) and even then I can't make my Kubuntu unstable. It's rock soli here. Yes, there are a few bugs that I encounter, but those are 4.5 bugs which still hasn't been fixed. But that are only small bugs like Dolphin hang/crash sometimes, no style for sudo apps, Kontact not fully working 'cause it's still a beta for example. But I don't care about those little bugs that much. It's workable, and that's what counts IMHO.
Most important laptop specs (this is my main computer, with Kubuntu on it):

4096MB RAM (DDR2)
500GB Hard Disk
ATI Mobility Radeon 4570HD Videocard with 512MB GDDR3 RAM, up to 2280MB VRAM
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo-processor T6600

OS: Kubuntu 10.10
