Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

I had no problems upgrading to Kubuntu 10.04 (or to the same version of Ubuntu, for that matter) which was a relief since I did have problems with 9.40, whose predecessor had been installed using Wubi. The only problems I've had so far are with the Desktop special effects, which I cannot activate (my sound card, I presume), and an odd problem with Knetwork Manager, which crashes sometimes when I switch network connections. Everything else seems to work fine.

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

I've been forced to change my vote from B to A.

I had been running LL from Alpha 1 through the updates following the gold release. Except for minor problems associated with defective releases, which were quickly fixed by immediate re-releases, LL has been solid for me. Cosmetically, though, it still lacked. During a brief period a month ago I got the ubuntu splash screen with the twinkling stars, but it rapidly returned to the black screen with no splash. Then, just before the release, a purple Ubuntu splash screen began showing, then it, too, disappeared. Although I wasn't having any other problems besides cosmetic ones, I wondered how a fresh install of the gold iso, followed by updates, would compare.

Now I get the beautiful Kubuntu splash screen. Booting is about 15 seconds faster. The installation runs about 10% faster. Video acceleration now works without my special xorg.conf file.

This version of Kubuntu now rates as the best Linux distro I have ever used, and that includes prior releases of Kubuntu. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

Hmmmm --- "Final" impression? Probably that should be solicited in 2012!

However, I will say this. I installed the last Alpha version before the first Beta release, one time, and have upgraded it periodically from then to now. Except for some fairly minor hiccups in the Alpha-Beta days, it has done just fine. This is the first version of Kubuntu in which I tried the built-in Desktop Effects and found them sufficiently powerful and stable that I did not feel the compulsion to install Compiz and Emerald to get the full benefits of 3D graphics performance. For my daily tasks, LL seems perfectly functional, including:

        - everything audio just works, including USB headphones
        - using the downloaded Nvidia proprietary driver, 1600x1200 video is excellent
        - Firefox, including the flash and java plugins is fine (OK, java is kind of "on-again, off-again", depending on which day I test it, but it's not important to my use)
        - VMWare Player plays my VMs
        - no issues with my crummy Canon printer or Logitech webcam
        - As of May 6, Plymouth works fine and looks fine

        Sooo ... I guess it gets an A -- why wouldn't I? 8)

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

I've given it a C for the time being. Slower than Karmic and nvidia vs. kernel issues feel like regression to me. I suspect the next few months will solve my issues, but we'll see.

Another system I have was totally trashed by the attempted online upgrade. I suspect it was because of not enough available space for the upgrade, but shouldn't the installer say something before it attempts the package changes? Who knows...

There was no critical data on it anyway, so I just wiped it and did a clean install.

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

mostly impressed handful of issues so far.

I killed a hard drive the first of April which happened to be / and spent all of April limping along with half of my apps installed on a 10gb temporary solution.

As soon as some urgent matters were taken care of I installed a new hard drive for / and used backups from previous 9.10 install as well as the temp install.

I did not play much with /home just went about my business for the most part.

** 1st issue was with my Logitech Mouseman Marble which has been working since 8.04 with a combination of an fdi policy and an xinput line in my autostart.

This time I had to fiddle with web searches and combine other peoples experience with some old fashioned guess work on my part.

** 2nd issue (and still ongoing) previously I could ALT-F1 and type the name of a menu entry and as soon as certain identification was made happily hit enter and be on my way.

Now only a few pre-installed items work in that manner.

Frankly I have not looked too far yet on this one.

** 3rd issue (and this one is only partly Kubuntu) some of the apps I installed from a script have been replaced and it would be nice if these were indicated somehow because in many cases I would prefer to hunt down the unchosen software rather than using the new choice.

** 4th issue the menu system is still just a little off, sorting has been improved but it is still a bit more complex than previous versions of Ubuntu or Windows to get a new menu item entered and running smoothly.

** last issue automounting of my flash/cd/dvd/thumb-drives etc fails more often than not. Dolphin gets it right slightly more often than krusader

**edited to add that when you plug several removables in and then properly release/eject them after two or so dolphin crashes then generates a crash report that you are scolded for "the crash report is useless, install stuff" and the stuff to install apparently does not exist

10.04 is the first Kubuntu I have used and on my Dell Inspiron 6400, I installed it last as a Triple boot with Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 and the installation was perfect no problems with grub2. I have to use wicd but everything else works perfectly. I like it and will be keeping it.

Long time debian user first time ubuntu install

                Kubuntu 10.04 LTS & KDE SC 4.4.3
                Day 1:
Clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS from CD. (Thanks for the burn Slacker!)
Ran updates updated to the 2.6.32-22 kernel, headers ect...
Installed Nvidia driver via "Hardware Updates" to "current"
                Installed some basics, browsers ect..

                Day 2:
                Added repositories installed all updates
                Then added KDE SC 4.4.3

Result seems to be a stable painless install of a really current O/S. Never even had to edit xorg.cnf

Seriously the Kubuntu world is looking pretty sweet to me. The repositories are super fast compared to Debians own even.

No problems so far. No hunting through forum posts for "fixes" to the clean install. Its not likely to be that easy for every install but for me its been an absolute pleasure.

                Day 3,
Still no issues began tweaking a little added conky, feh, vnstat just for fun.

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

                    I give it an A.
Let me start off by saying I'm a newbie. My interest was peaked when I got a copy of hardy heron a little while ago, and I was pretty impressed with how slick everything looked. my only issue was that every time I had some bright spark idea that I wanted to try run something I knew how to do in windows, I'd end up going through sites, advice on how to run it, and lose all hope. I uninstalled kubuntu, and went back to the usual.

about a week ago I got a copy of lucid lynx for a media PC I had decided to build(I was trying to keep it low cost, and there isn't any lower than free ). with minimal searching and a few commands I had learnt when going through hardy heron, I was able to install everything I needed, do a couple of updates and even install diablo 2 using WINE... The whole experience was a lot less stressful and a lot more fun.

kubuntu has always been a great alternative to the other operating systems in the business world. now with this release I believe it is ready to tackle the windows market share head on. The long story short:
Congratulations on a truly amazing user-friendly release.

Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Final Impressions: Vote now!

                      I give it a B-.
I upgraded from 9.10 on two machines (desktop and thinkpad). On the desktop I had issues with Kontact (Akonadi and multiple fetching of emails), Kaffeine (still not as good as it was on KDE3). Everything else is nice to work with.
But on my 6yo thinkpad Sleep and Hibernate buttons stopped working after the upgrade, everything became slower and needed more energy, the system always started with the screen dimmed down, plus all the problems from the desktop. So yesterday I decided enough was enough, wiped Kubuntu and installed Mint 9 (gnome) on that machine. So far, everything seems way better and all the problems I mentioned are gone. Also, setting up Thunderbird is a piece of cake compared to Kontact.

I'll still stick with Kubuntu on my desktop, but I wish the Kubuntu folks would focus more on getting stuff to work instead always introducing more features. Did we really need akonadi or the KDE4 version of Kaffeine THAT badly?

                        A, works fine
Only insignificant issues which were generally easily solved or worked around, and are related to Kde 4.5 RC 1.

I've tried 9.10 when it came out, but didn't like it very much. This time, after trying out the new versions of all major distros, I found that K 10.04 works best for me overall

I've been using it for over a month now. Setup and configuration was easy enough.. Even my wide panel 1440x900 works without stretching my photos as was the case with previous versions.

I gave it a "D," but I think that most of my frustration is due to KDE. I stuck with Hardy because I believed that it was an LTS release; finally discovered at upgrade time that it wasn't, so I had to go through the try the "easy" path of upgrading to 9.10, which trashed my hard drive and thence to Lucid. When I finally got Lucid installed, it was back to square one; need to install extra repositories in order to get essential programs. And the list goes on, but I'll spare you the details--I'm going to see how to delete KDE and try life without its annoyances.

I use KDE on my main browsing box, but I admit it's sometimes a pain. If you want to delete it, may I suggest you install Ubuntu Server. I've been using that a bit and it's quite refreshing. Being Ubuntu, everything is pretty much the same as Kubuntu and you won't have a lot of trouble figuring things out.

Well I have to give the Kubuntu lads a round on me. Installing Kubuntu on my laptop was a breeze. I switched to Linux suddenly without doing much research. Having not used Linux before I must say that it has been an absolute pleasure working with this OS. Sure a couple of things I took for granted in M$ took a little more work to set up, but the reward of achieving my goals far exceeded the few hours it took me to figure/find out. I am proud to say that after only 3 weeks using Kubuntu I have been 100% Linux. I have no more need for wine or M$. I look forward to many more releases and "challenges".

Once again thanks to all that helped make Kubuntu what it is!!
