New to linux & kubuntu; x86 or x64?

    Hey y'all!

I just downloaded both the x86 version and x64. Does the x64 version only work with AMD CPUs, or Intel also?

    Specs:
    Intel Core2 Quad (Q6600),
    4GB RAM,
    512MB video card.

So what should I install? the 32 bit version, or the 64 bit?

    Thanks,
    ElWray

    Welcome.

If you have a 64-bit CPU, you can install either one. If you have a 32-bit CPU, you must install the x86 version.

So it doesn't matter whether it's AMD or Intel, eh?

      Thanks a bunch

Alright, this is kinda off topic, but I got this 100gb free partition for kubuntu but it's ntfs. What do I have to do with/to it?

Personally, and others would concur, download and burn the GParted LiveCD (ver 0.5.2-9) and use it to prepare this partition.

It is recommended that you create two partitions - one for root ( / ) -- I use a 10GB partition (you can make it larger, but 10GB is more than enough); - one for your home ( /home ) -- any size you want up to the remaining amount of partition space. Some would recommend a third partition for swap. If you decide to have a swap partition, you would be creating three partitions. A swap partition should be at least the size of your RAM - 4GB - although it can be larger if you want (but no larger than twice your RAM or you will just be 'wasting' disc space).

GParted will also be used to format these partitions. I recommend using ext3 - it is very stable and reliable - the 'standard' file system for Linux for years.

Once you have the partitions created and formatted using GParted, then you can reboot using the Kubuntu LiveCD and proceed with you installation.

In addition to Snowhog's advice, I'll point out a couple of relevant items:

              - if the available partition is a primary partition (you only get 4) and is the last one available, you can either use GParted to change it to an extended type, and then make multiple logical partitions in it, or you could just install Kubuntu in it as-is, after reformatting to ext4

              - if using that one remaining partition means you don't have the flexibility to make a swap partition as well, you can make a swap file and use that in lieu of a swap partition. You really need one or the other. Google will tell you how to do that.

Finished installing. All went well so far, thanks for the advice. Now I got other problems (as expected...)
