Getting all pakages back from Hardy 8.04....Ideas?

I'm wondering if there's a way in apt-get or aptitude to make a list of all my packages I have in Hardy then when I put Lucid in I can tell it on first boot now bring all my packages back from this list?

I don't "think" aptoncd would work as the .deb files would be for Hardy.
    Thanks

I have some doubts that this will work out the way you hope, but ...

    Code:
    less /usr/share/doc/aptitude/README

Matches package versions which are currently installed.

Since all versions are tested by default, this normally matches packages
    which are currently installed.
I may be wrong, but I think you can list all installed packages on your Hardy machine with the command below:

    Code:
    aptitude search ~i
    On my own Hardy system:

    Code:
    $ aptitude search ~i | wc
      1250 10799 101250
That seems to imply that I have 1250 packages installed. If you are going to make any use of such a long list then you may do well to redirect output to a file and then print it out for reference.

    Code:
    $ aptitude search ~i > all-my-hardy-packages.list

But note that some of the applications don't have the developer support and they are dropped from the repositories or replaced with the new applications.

          Code:
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
          dpkg --set-selections < kubuntu-files
          sudo dselect
This will open up a dselect session. Type ‘I‘ and allow dselect to install of the the packages listed in your (k)ubuntu-files document. When it’s finished, type ‘Q‘ and hit the ENTER key to exit dselect.
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think dpkg will install from the repos like apt-get

          Update Dselect installs does

You'll probably want to do it anyway, but 4.4 is a different beast from 3.5. Also, don't forget that a few programs might not run on a newer version. I don't want to sound negative, just want to remind you that from 8.04 to 10.04 is a very big change.

Re: Getting all pakages back from Hardy 8.04....Ideas?

by now most all still-developed KDE apps have migrated to DE4, or have replacements. In Lucid the only major 'holdout' I see is Commoner2, but that (and any remaining KDE3 apps) still run in KDE4 just fine, they just pull in the KDE3 core libraries when they are installed. (no conflicts or damages in doing this either)

Now as for your settings, the individual apps will maintain their settings, but your desktop settings will NOT as it is an entirely different system.

IMO it would probably be safer and easier to just make a list of the applications you use as if you make a list of ALL your installed packages as Rog describes for you, I see the big possibility of big problems as between 8.04 and 10.04, there are so many packages that either don't exist anymore, have changed names, etc that trying to install those in your big list might cause more headache than it is worth trying to find and fix broken and missing and conflicting packages. I think it might take less time to just install Lucid and then find and install the missing things as you go

Hopefully others have made such a move as you and can shed some better insights

Re: Getting all pakages back from Hardy 8.04....Ideas?

I agree with claydoh. All you really should do is identify those applications that you installed after you installed Hardy - the ones that didn't come as part of the default installation. These are the applications that you, as the user, are concerned about.

Once that list is compiled [read:written down on paper], you can then search to see which packages are available for Kubuntu 10.04. This will let you know 'in advance' which ones are/are not available.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Getting all pakages back from Hardy 8.04....Ideas?

OK I reinstalled as dselect didn't work as expected and will just start checking off things I want in synaptic.
                      First real problem
In hardy I plugged the speakers in the rear audio jacks and my headset in the front jacks so when i wasn't on the headset (rare) I'd just unmute the back jacks by right clicking the speaker icon.
After fiddling around I got the back sound working though the mic doesn't pick up good in Skype when making phone calls and Skype is my only phone.
Nothing working yet on the front jacks yet......gotta plug the headset in the jacks on the back...Ideas?
                      Thanks

Have you looked at Kmix and made sure that everything is as it should be there? For a different perspective you can also type "alsamixer" on the command line. Hit ESC to exit. Use "m" to mute and unmute channels.
