Install on motherboard with AMD SB850 Southbridge

I can't get the Lucid install to recognize any sATA drives on my new Gigbyte 880GA-UD3H motherboard. I've tried setting the drive to IDE emulation and AHCI, but neither works. Anyone had any luck? I'm sure it must be supported by the Kernel, as Centos 5.4 and 5.5 recognize the drives just fine. Incidentally, if I put 2 drives in and set the sATA controller to RAID mode and create a mirror then the array IS recognized, though because it is a "Fake" raid there are other issues.

That's actually the Ubiquity installer -- the kernel will probably have no problem seeing your drives (you can verify that with a Live CD).

Did you set the "boot" flag on the root partition of the one you want to install on? Some BIOS's seem to need that.

Also, if you try to install the OS on a partition that is not the /dev/sdx1 partition, that can sometimes be an issue.

Also, does your motherboard have an IDE channel -- is there anything connected to it? That can sometime be a problem -- disconnect the IDE device for the installation, then you can reconnect it later and everything should work.

I tried replacing the IDE DVDRW drive with sATA, no success. While running the livecd I went to the command line and did a sudo fdisk -l and the drive does show up as /dev/sda. I tried manually creating partitions (I did set the boot flag) but Ubiquity still doesn't see anything. I don't see any options for booting from the command line as in previous versions.

I don't know why Ubiquity has such a terrible time with some BIOS's. All I can do at this point is toss out things to try:

        - on some motherboards, some of the SATA ports have "priority" over others -- black ones over blue ones, etc. So see if there is a higher priority connector available

        - your boot device priority should be hard drive first, and SATA channel before IDE channel

        - the SATA mode will have to be "Legacy IDE" or "PATA"

        - I use the Alternate Install CD for installation -- I don't know whether the Ubiquity installer is different on that one or not

        - make sure the onboard RAID capability is disabled in BIOS

        - if there's a BIOS flash update for your motherboard, I would advise updating it

that's all I can think of -- some BIOS setting change should fix it

ubiquity is the livcd installer, fancy gui and all. the alternate cd is text mode (A modified Debian Installer), and is made partly for those with boot/installation problems with the livecd

Ahaaaa! That's probably the answer to this problem, then. Thanks, claydoh!

EDIT: I have added a note on this subject to the "Top 20 FAQs", #15.
