Installer freezes

Hi,

I just downloaded the ISO image for Kubuntu 10.04 (i386 version) but when I try to install, the installer freezes without any error message. I've tried several times and it freezes at different moment (once it was between step 1 and 2, once after the last step and once I couldn't even launch the installer, so this seems completely random). I've checked the MD5 of the ISO image as well as the integrity of the CD and both seem OK.

Did anybody face the same kind of problem? If so, is there a workaround?
(I know I could simply upgrade from 9.10 with the package manager, but I'd prefer to make a fresh install and anyway, I'd prefer to have a working CD in case something goes wrong with the upgrade process)

Thanks!

Reboot the LiveeCD and run a memory check on your PC. Let it run for at least 30 minutes.

Also I read a notice somewhere yesterday (Phoronix?) that there is a problem with the Live (Desktop) CD that does not exist with the Alternate Install CD. So, use the Desktop CD to verify that your hardware works with Lucid, but use the Alternate Install CD to install it.

Re: Installer freezes

I had this problem and some others. I have an AMD 64X2 processor, 4GB RAM, and an ATi HD5770. I am running 9.10 with the latest Catalyst (10.4) drivers no problem. I cannot upgrade from 9.10 in situ, it just aborts. I downloaded the standard (Live CD) 64-bit 10.4 distro and that gives me the splash screen and the rotating white/blue dots then goes to a black screen and my monitors register no output. I read the above posts and others and downloaded the alternate CD. This installs (old-style text graphic though) but on booting I get a quick flash of the splash screen and then black screens. The only thing I can do is boot as a resume which gives me various options. I can get a prompt but none of these leads to a working X. I have run apt-get update, which reports everything is up-to-date and I have tried to install plasma-desktop which reports it is already installed.

I feel it is the ATi card that is causing the problem but it works perfectly (Inc. 3D) in 9.10. I have only been using Kubuntu since 9.04 and had finally grown to love it, having used SUSE from 7.0 right through to 11.2 prior to that.

I have checked both install CDs and they are fine. I have run memcheck for hours (overnight) and I do not have a memory problem.

Can anyone clarify anything for me? Please ask me for more info and be as specific as possible. I have been using linux since the year dot (minix days) but I am somewhat stumped this time.

Thanks in advance and fingers crossed....

Amd64 + ATI Video = Village of the Damned?
I have ATI-aiw-9200 with Athlon64 3800+ on Asus A8Vmx mobo with AMI BIOSv.0405 dated 05/09/11. I have a pair of IDE disks, of sufficient capacity, where I have a ton of unbacked data stored. I decided to unplug them and install an unused .5 TB Seagate Barracuda SATA drive off the just-released v.10 live CD. The AMI BIOS also supports SATA and RAID, but neither selection solves this problem: The ´alternate AMD64´install doesn´t recognize the Seagate SATA drive. The install doesn´t appear to know the drive, though it is recognized in the boot-up post. When install comes quickly to ¨partition¨ menu, the install stops. I had previously installed Kubu 7.10 on this disk in this machine. What up with that? -dwm-

So! By now (Sunday eve) I have tried the latest Qparted install CD, to no better success, Tried my K8.04 install disk, no joy. Picked up again the K7x install disk, and it installed. Ergo! The install problem I have with 10 exists also in 8, but not 7. (7 is generally age appropriate, except for my new Samsung 2233 multisync monitor, whose features don´t seem appreciated by old K)

Re: Installer freezes

Just ran the in-situ upgrade to 10.4 again. It ran for nearly an hour before finally aborting, telling me it could not proceed. I did notice some errors along the way to do with graphics. Looks like I am stuck with 9.10 for the foreseeable.

I read a post somewhere recently where someone praised Ubuntu as the only distro for which in-situ upgrades "always worked". All I can say is "Ha!" :P

Turns out the aborted update has broken all sorts of dependencies. I could be on my way back to SUSE. Anyone want to try to talk me out of it

Re: Installer freezes

Same problems here: I have an Acer M3641. Trying to install Kubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) on it must be what's used as punishment in the 10th circle of hell.

I have tried everything I can think of. First tried the regular install cd: got a screen with colored lines and then nothing.
Then (after some googleing) disabled onboard sound and firewire in the bios and in the install procedure selected "noapic", "no acpi" and deleted "quiet splash" from the install options.
That seemed hopeful: the installer started, could select keyboard and country. But then the fun continued: I wanted to manually define HD partitions. Chose to create a couple of EXT4 partitions, no problem. But then I wanted to use an old EXT3 partition, so I chose to use it, not format it and mount it. Somehow that lead to a KDE shell being booted, with a single icon "Install Kubuntu 10.04" in the desktop folder. Clicking it repeats the install procedure.
That happens every time I try to use the old partition.

So I figured I'd not mount the partition in the install and do it later manually. Not selecting old partitions took me another step further. I could enter my user info and the install started.
Only: every time I try it, it proceeds to somewhere around 40-50 % and then the screen goes either dark or multicolored and nothing happens.

Also tried the alternate cd: same problem. At some point during the install, the screen will go black and everything hangs.

HELP
I also came from SuSE, was pretty enthousiastic about 9.10, but this must be the worst install procedure I have ever encountered.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Stefan

I think there are problems with it too. Windows XP does not see the CD when it runs. Yet the integrity check says the disc is good. Also, when I burn it, it seems to finish "early", the progress bars in the app do not look like 100%, maybe only 60%. Not sure what, if anything that means. Also, can't install Wubi from within Windows, disc won't run....

How to ask someone to look into this? And how to know when it is fixed?

Odd, all my other CDs run fine, and Karmic installed as Wubi fine.

Oh yes - that's the other thing I didn't mention and a tad off-topic really, so I apologise for that. This is the first ATi card I have bought in years. nVidia cards have never given me any problems in Linux and their proprietary drivers were always fine but this ATi HD5570 card was so fast and comparatively so cheap that I could not resist it. Worked OK in Windows 7 from the start but in Kubuntu for example there was no dual heading and I just can't work now without two monitors. When the Catalyst drivers version went to 10.3 the card began to function properly. The latest version of Catalyst (10.4 - slightly confusing!) also works in Kubuntu 9.10.

I have decided to re-install Kubuntu 9.10 and stick with it while keeping an eye on this forum. Let's hope someone bottoms this. I haven't looked to see if our non-K friends are having the same problem with Ubuntu but I never did like Gnome, so I wouldn't go down that road anyway!

Re: Installer freezes

This is my first install on this particular computer, and I get stuck at the following screen.

Computer is Toshiba Satellite AMD 64, w/ 4gb ram, ATI Radeon HD 4200 video, 300gb hard drive. I'm trying to dualboot with windows 7 as I do with all my computers. This is the only 64bit one though, and the only one with an ATI video card. I've read above that this seems to be a recurring issue.

However, 10.04 runs fine in VirtualBox in host Windows 7(other than virtualbox lagginess)

I'm just hoping this screen might help someone figure this all out.

Thanks

I am also facing similar problem. It just goes blank screen after I press "Install" all "Try". There is no activity of CD at all.

I downloaded twice using bittorrent. Both the times checked md5sum.

It is not working on 2 machines - Intel dual core laptop and amd sempron desktop. Both these places Karmic is working fine.

I also tried to work in virtual box on both the machines but it is giving same problem in virtual box.

I have still got nowhere with this. This time I re-installed 9.10, let it update and then went for the online upgrade to 10.04. That is I did not load any proprietary ATi drivers or move away from what teh installer installed. This time the upgrade ran smoothly to its conclusion but when I rebooted after the install I got the same problem: I get the splash screen and then a black screen and no further activity. Using a resume image I can get root access and it appears that X11 is just not set up. I looked in /etc/X11. There is no xorg.conf but there is xorg.conf.failsafe. This doesn't work either!

And it is just so easy to install 9.10 and then upgrade the ATi drivers to the latest Catalyst version.... I just don't get it!
