    firewall and kmix

    Hi,

I've installed 10.04 and it's gone well. A very clean and easy distro- a keeper. Only two queries so far: I can't find the firewall to see if it is activated; and my sound is muted. Kmix doesn't arrive on the desktop when I click on it.

    I'd appreciate some help, please.

The KDE Goodies PPA used to have kcm-ufw, a System Configuration control module for the Uncomplicated Firewall. However, šumski has removed it for some reason.

At KDE-Apps.org I found the UFW KControl Module, but it might not work on 10.04. The description states:

This is a KDE control center module to configure and control the Uncomplicated Firewall, as shipped with Kubuntu 10.10. The following features are supported:

    1. Enable/disable firewall
    2. Configure firewall default settings
    3. Add, edit, and remove rules
    4. Re-order rules via drag\'n\'drop
    5. Import/export of rules
    6. Setting of some IP tables modules

The module will appear under "Network and Connectivty" category.
Any particular reason why you're running such an old version of Kubuntu?

I selected 10.04 as the Kubuntu download page stressed it was stable and supported till 2013. The very thought of bleeding edge stuff frightens me, particularly as Ubuntu has jettisoned K. The command line and I are strangers.

Is there a sensible alternative for someone like me?

Don't let the support date worry you...security updates will continue to come for other versions even after regular updates cease; plus, for many programs, you can continue to obtain updates via each version's "backports" repository or directly from personal package archives (PPAs) on Launchpad.net.

10.04 is pretty old by now, a number of useful programs aren't compiled against it anymore. It's difficult to say which one is "best," because everyone's hardware is different. I'd encourage you to experiment with Live CDs/USBs of 10.10, 11.04, and 11.10 to see which one you prefer and which one supports your particular system's configuration.

          Hi Steve...

Odd. I added the repository but when I run "update," it couldn't find anything with "AMD64." Is this only for 32 bit systems?

No... the PPA doesn't contain anything for Lucid. Maverick is the oldest release it supports.
