yes, the servers seemed to be having hiccups, so the package installa/reinstalls did not complete - seems fixed just now on my end - may need to re-run apt-get update/dist-upgrade, etc

Drat. I suppose you know what it means when we repeat our "solution", while expecting a different result .....

        Code:
        sudo service kdm stop
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
        Code:
        sudo nvidia-xconfig
        Code:
        sudo service kdm start
and then I'll probably be joining claydoh's stumped club.

Nope. If you didn't get the greeter, after "service kdm start", then it's no go.

I don't know what's wrong with your KDM -- I don't ever remember seeing this failure to launch the greeter.

hmmm. as satisfying as it is to stump you I was really hoping it would be a simple fix.

Thank you very much for all of your effort anyway--I've learned a lot!

I came across something in an old 2009 bug report that's interesting. Can you

                  Code:
                  cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
and post what you see there, please?

                          Re: no GUI after update?

I just reviewed the thread, and see we never got a look at the X log. If you can

                          Code:
                          cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and paste in the output, I'll look it over and see if anything useful jumps out.

Also, were there any issues or errors with removing the nouveau driver -- did you run the update-initramfs -u command at the end of that?

That's all one long text file? That's crazy -- it's like a long record of activity installing two different nvidia drivers, plus mounting and looking at a USB memory stick, and I'm not sure what else -- running fdisk and vim, among other things. Where on your system did you find that?

But, aside from the curiosity of it, I don't see anything there relevant to your video problem. That is all about your old Princeton Graphics monitor -- it needs a modeline in the "Screen" stanza of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

                                *crisis*

I got into kate and added the bit of code to the display subsection:

                                SubSection "Display"
                                Depth 24
                                Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
                                EndSubSection

and rebooted-nothing changed so I added "meta" to modes and rebooted and now my computer is "stuck" on the blue screen with the kubuntu logo and the five dots.

should I press "esc" during boot-up to enter the grub?
