I can now start firefox from both krummer and konsole

I right-clicked on the K-menu and went into the "KDE menu editor." There I scrolled down to "internet" and created a new shortcut for firefox. I selected the firefox icon by browsing to the folder where firefox is installed. From then, simply clicking ALT+F2 (i.e. launching krummer, thanks claydoh for your explanation) does bring up a valid firefox shortcut, and I can now launch the program from krummer.

using --purge only purges system configurations, and not user configs.

I see, thanks claydoh. Did a superficial search for a ccleaner linux equivalent -- do you recommend bleachit for this kind of cleaning up?

I don't use any cleaner tools, don't think they are really necessary. All local config files are in your home dir, hidden "dot" files. I use a 7 year old laptop as my main computer and never had enough clutter to worry about. Bleachbit probably won't hurt if you are security conscious.

thanks for the feedback claydoh, I don't worry about clutter so much as interference between inconsistent settings, e.g. I have experimented with touchpad controllers such as gsynaptics, gpointing-device-settings, touchfreeze, syndaemon, and I probably forget some, and I just worried that some forgotten setting might still be active, but the way you put it I probably shouldn't worry...
