Continuous login loop after entering the correct passwrd. wtf is wrong?

I would like to thank in advance anyone who could be of help in this post.

I run win Vista and Linux in dual boot at a sony vaio vgn-sr29vn laptop.

The boot goes smoothly until the login screen arrives. I enter the password. The system proceeds and starts to load an icon of lucid. But just in a few seconds the screen gets black and brings me back to the same login screen.

I have tried so far some tips from other threads with no success:

deleting the language pack: sudo apt-get remove language-pack-kde-en
I rebooted and the login problem remains.

    renaming mv /home/lefteris/.kde /home/lefteris/kdebackup
I rebooted and the login problem remains.

deleting ICEauthority and Xauthority hidden files.
I rebooted and the login problem remains.

removing kdm and reinstalling it: sudo aptitude remove kdm , then: sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install kdm
I rebooted and the login problem remains.

    Whats left...
Btw when i try to access the virtual console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 the screen gets black, goes back the login screen and then its stucks! nothing works, keyboard or mouse.

Am I doing something wrong? Or am I missing something here?

    Thank you all !

Have a look at this posting:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111517.0

It has several solutions to your problem.

When you first power up hold the shift key down until the Grub menu starts. Take the second option, the "recovery". A console screen will eventually appear. Arrow down to the option which starts a root console with a network connection. Hit the Tab key to the OK button and press the Enter key.

Once you have a root conole try this:
sudo dpkg --configure -a (then startx)

If startx doesn't start your kdm and KDE4 desktop then try this

    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

    and then try startx

If that doesn't work then do this:
    apt-get install mc
(which is Midnight Commander, a neat console based file manager and editor).
    Run it.
Navigate to /var/log/ and look at the Xorg.0.log to see what your xserver errors are.
You can also check syslog, messages, kern.log, kdm.log, fail.log and dmsg for clues as to why your xserver is not starting.

Greygeek before giving the feedback on what you've suggested I would like to thank you for your time and effort giving some extra help here. I appreciate that.

So to get back to your suggestions:

I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a and then startx

Then the interface jumps from console to deskop but with a black background and where after a few seconds i get an error: Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages.
I dont think this error is related to the general problem but what is important is that the black screen freezes and no keyboard or mouse works. Its dead i have to shut down from power switch.

I reboot and i try anyway the command apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. The installation goes smoothly and i startx again. This time jumps from console to the desktop environment of lucid (no black screen) but still everything freezes again like earlier.

The Xorg.0.log does not seem to have any error messages but just (II)nformational messages. Its quite a long list.

At kern.log ive noticed an error message saying: Cannot read proc file system, 1.

      kdm.log is veeeeeery long....
fail.log havent looked yet. Ill get back to that.

      Any additional conclusions so far?

Btw something else that is strange and i would like to ask. I read in a thread somewhere that maybe by changing the login password i could finally loging. So i went to recovery mode console and changed the root password. But when i boot normally and i get to the login GUI screen i still have to enter the old password. Unless the root password and the login are two different ones? :P Im not sure whats going on here, im not that of a linux expert as you must have already figured out.

I have noticed also something else. when grub starts and i get the booting menu i have the following choices:

        Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic
        Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic (recovery mode)

        windows vista OS

The question is. Is there a possibility after the upgrade to Lucid 10.04 im still trying to run the 9.10 karmic koala and thats the problem? Shouldnt the Lucid kernel appear at the booting menu? Why it does not?

It should, IF your version upgrade completed normally. Your system appears to be borked. You were running 8.04 and upgraded to 9.10. However, you don't have a "recovery mode" to the 9.10 version. AND, there is no evidence of a 10.4 kernel being installed by grub. It is very likely that you have a mixture of systems. How long did you run the 9.10 system?

IMO, your easiest solution is to back up any important data to a DVD(s), and install 10.4 from a LiveCD on top of your current Linux partition. Then reinstall your data.

Was the same story when I upgraded to 9.10. I don't remember how i did it but the new kernel was not appearing along with the grub loader but it was installed in the hd. Then I had to insert it in the grub loader to appear in the boot menu from where and it booted normally. Now as it seems i still boot the 9.10 and not the lucid upgrade. But anyway you are right i should make a clean install.

I will try back up all the information i want and then re-install. Thanks for the tips GreyGeek.

It does look like your installation is missing the 10.04 kernel. Perhaps a reinstall will fix it. I ran into a similar problem a while ago. It is possible to use an older kernel - I did that for a long time to avoid the problem. Another possible solution is to install the 2.6.34 kernel. Anyway, you are not alone and there are quite a few others out there with this problem My thread is here.
