    Kubuntu 10.04 / Win7 dual boot - no grub

    I've been struggling to set up a dual-boot system with 10.04 and Win7 for about a month now. My issue is that no matter what I try, I cannot get a grub screen to show. After the BIOS is exited, Win7 starts loading.

    I'm trying to set up the dual-boot system on a single 500gb drive. I first installed W7, and used the partitioner in the W7 installer to create a 400gb partition at the beginning of the drive, on which I installed W7.

    After W7 installed and was working properly, I installed 10.04 on the 100gb partition, setting aside 4gb of that for swap. After the install finished, I realized I wasn't getting a grub screen, so I used the 10.04 text based installer to reinstall grub. Same issue. Using the 10.04 desktop installer, I opened the terminal and followed the directions in the Grub 2 Wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2#Restor...Reinstallation) to recover Grub.

    During these steps, I ran into one issue. When I got the the line noted below, "kate" was not recognized as a valid command. I had to exit chroot, use the line "sudo kate /etc/default/grub", edit the file, the chroot back in. I continued the steps and everything seemed to work properly, however a grub menu still failed to show during boot.

    $ sudo fdisk -l
    $ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    $ sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
    $ sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
    $ sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
    $ sudo chroot /mnt

    Now you need to edit the /etc/default/grub file to fit your system

    $ nano /etc/default/grub Error Here (I replaced "nano" with "kate")

    I've also edited the /etc/default/grub file to match what is listed under "Where did my Grub2 boot menu go!?!?!" with no success. From what I've found, the shift key is supposed to display the grub menu during boot if it's just hidden. I've tried both shift keys without success. I'm getting pretty frusterated trying to get this setup to work correctly. I can usually resolve any issues I have by spending a couple hours searching the forums, but it seems like I'm striking out this time.

    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    See Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu in Perfect Harmony

    It's written for a Ubuntu / Windows 7 dual boot installation, but you should be able to follow it for installation of Kubuntu.

      Thanks for the link, but still no grub at boot.

      I went into disk management, deleted the two linux partitions and extended my W7 partition to use the whole drive, then I followed those instructions to a tee. As soon as the bios finished, "loading operating system" flashes for a split second, then windows starts booting. I tried pressing the right shift key during boot, which should bring up a hidden grub menu from what I've read.

      The one thing odd I noticed is that W7 didn't create the small "reserved" system partition mentioned in the guide.

        By any chance do you have any Dell bloatware installed, such as Windows Datasafe?? Datasafe is known to interfere with GRUB by writing to the Master Boot Record when it starts. The solution is to remove Datasafe from your disk.

          On a HP Z200 workstation I had a similar problem and found that the BIOS was the problem - its "Advanced" tab led to a "Power On Options" screen with "POST messages" having a default "Disabled" value - when I changed that to "Enabled" the BIOS splashscreen was replaced by additional startup info
          AND the boot manager on the Master Boot Record then appeared! Perhaps your problem is similar.

            I don't know a whole heck of a lot about dual boot. But my win7/10.04 works just fine.

            My only suggestion would be to stay far away from win's partition manager and simply let kubuntu do the work for you, adjusting the partitions in the install. That's what I did and it works flawlessly. Hope that helps!

              I have two more options for you black300zx.

              1. Have you ever considered separate hard drives installed in hard drive cartridges? They wouldn't be hot swappable of course, but you would slide whichever OS you wanted to use before boot up. Newegg has a high-quality units available for a reasonable price.

              Drawer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-007-_-Product

              Extra Caddy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-017-_-Product

              2. Again this requires two separate HDDs for each OS and if you use SATA drives, then switch the power to the drive (OS) you want to use before boot up is another way to go. You simply connect the 4-wire power connector to a 4-ganged single-throw toggle switch (common connectors), then connect each drive's power connectors to the two different sides of the switch. Then just switch to the OS you want to boot to.

              The advantages of using different drives are many, not the least of which is complete independent OSs so if one disk crashes, it only takes out 1 OS. Another suggestion would be to have a 3rd drive that always powers on at boot for use as a data drive for both OSs. Again, this way you don't lose your date files if you have to reinstall either OS.

              I know this is not the direction you want to go. And, I know this doesn't answer your question, but it is another approach that works.
