Re: Kwin crashes then other stuff crashes and locks my system up

If updating via the command line (which is usually the quickest way) sudo apt-get update updates the list of available packages. To download and install them you need to type

    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
It will then download and install all updates (and necessary dependencies.

      Just an add on:
if you do: (copy / paste)
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update&&sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
then you will get the whole thing with one command and you can retrieve the
command at any time in the terminal with the arrow keys on your keyboard

Interesting. When I opened Synaptic, it showed all the kde 4.4.2 applications could be upgraded. I directed Synaptic to mark all upgrades and then applied. I'm now running kde-4.4.5. Now to run the system through it's paces and see if anything crashes especially kwin.

          Great
There a few little issues this being an RC but the final should be out in about a week
and akonadi should be behaving by KDE4.5.1

Just for completeness, superkaramba on Kubuntu doesn't always work as it should.

Sorry guys. Didn't mean to ignore your post. I posted my last just as you posted yours. Thank you. I know about apt-get dist upgrade, but I was under the impression that that was for the whole OS not just the KDE front end. Every problem I have teaches me something else about this great OS. Thanks.

I hate to say it, but Firefox just crashed... twice in the past 10 minutes and I don't know why.

              Are you using FF 3.6.8?

I haven't seen mine crash for a long while.

What were you doing, how many tabs did you have open?

Re: Kwin crashes then other stuff crashes and locks my system up

If you are using 4.4.5 I think you are using the latest stable version, as opposed to the 4.5rc? Whichever you are using, firefox should not be crashing every 5 minutes.

The latest version of FF is, as Fintan says, 3.6.8. I wonder whether one of your FF extensions is throwing a wobbler.

How long have you been running firefox without issue? Have you recently installed an extension? One other possibility is an issue with your profile, in which case you can do this (no prior knowledge assumed):

Start firefox, then select bookmarks/organise bookmarks/import and backup. My preference is to export to html. Export them. Close firefox.

Then in your file manager open the home directory selecting view/show hidden files. Go to the folder containing firefox (it may be .mozilla or .mozilla firefox or .firefox). Navigate into the folder until you see your profile folder which will be a long alphanumeric sequence followed by default. rename the folder (don't delete it yet) - the usual way is generally by following the file name with .old.

Restart firefox which will now be a virgin copy. Firstly import your bookmarks (bookmarks/organise bookmarks/import and backup and import the HTML file you earlier exported). Play around with firefox for a while. If there are no crashes you can then start installing extensions (best to download them again). Once you are happy with everything you can then remove the old profile.

Yeah, that would have been my next suggestion.

Or if you have xmarks installed you can back up you BM's and PW's with that.

Re: Kwin crashes then other stuff crashes and locks my system up

Okay, to catch up, I opened FF, saved my BMs as an HTML file, opened Dolphin and went to /Home/.mozilla/firefox and renamed the
folder 83wlams6.default to 83wlams6.default.old. Then I closed FF and reopened it.

My BMs are still active?!?! The only thing that changed is the forum didn't know my auto-login. Could there be another FF directory? I don't get it.

I have not added any extensions to FF, but it did upgrade once or twice since installing Lynx. Any ideas?

Okay Snowhog, you've got my attention. Do you mean you suspect a cache problem with FF or Kubuntu? How do I check this out?

BTW, I was playing BOS Wars and Akondi crashed (along with my whole system) twice in 15 minutes! The computer rebooted without incident, but
this is getting very frustrating very quickly.

I just took a look at my syslog. I think I may have found some problems, but I'd like an "expert" to comment on this excerpt. This is the last uncommanded reboot. The system is still running (so far) repeating the sr0 line constantly.

I lost some posts due to LL spontaneously rebooting. I took a look at my syslog again and with a little research believe my reboot problem was caused by nepomukservices. I disabled this service in the system settings and removed the application using synaptic. Upon reboot, so far, the system seems to be stable and it hasn't rebooted yet. I even got through an entire BOS Wars game which I could not do before. If the system remains solid over the next 12 hours, I intend to update this thread as SOLVED !!!

Thank you to all who weighed in and offered your help. I really do appreciate it. I try to give back whenever I can. Eventually, someone has to have a problem that I know how to fix

I still do have the VFS error message, but that will be another post I think. Thanks again.
