I tried the walkthrough again today, and once more it failed in the usual way. As soon as the nouveau drivers were removed the system was unusable.
But as I was crawling out of single-user mode to install the nvidia drivers after doing some root stuff, it froze. So I hit ctrl-alt-del and it went through the process of stopping what it was doing and shutting down gracefully.
It was during this shut-down that I noticed something weird. There were errors on the screen that made me think ACPI was the problem.
So I added acpi=off to the run cmd in grub, and that fixed the problem. I am now running kubuntu10.4 with proper 3d nvidia drivers with all the desktop pretties.
First thing I did was compile me some working wlan drivers.
So thanks to everyone who helped - we got there in the end!
But really, you know, it shouldn't have to be this hard.
