I don't know if this is a correct solution, but it works more or less. Maybe someone has a better solution than I found, or maybe this can help somebody else.
After installing Lucid Lynx (completely clean installation) I had lots of issues. Most of them are solved. 8.04 worked far better for me. Things that are not yet solved I'll ask about later.
I'm in no way an expert, but I'll try to explain it as good as I can.
I have a graphic card NVidia GeForce FX 5200. Monitor LG 1919S TFT. After installing the recommend NVidia driver (version 173) strange things started to happen. Fonts were very small, but not always. Fonts were really ugly, but not always. And not in all programs. KDE programs and desktop were not ugly, only small. But not everywhere and not all the time. Very special way to drive you completely crazy
Can't help it, I really couldn't find any logic in it. Except that it looked like every font was sometimes suddenly a lot smaller and uglier, though antialiasing worked. Most of the time.
This is a production machine (or it is supposed to be). But sometimes a game is fun. Playing Einstein, Galaga, Trackballs (and maybe more, didn't try) I got a black screen with Out of Range 81.3kHz / 65 Hz
Ctrl-alt-Escape worked sometimes (the skull), but sometimes only going to a console and reboot worked.
Removing the driver solved the Out of Range error. But then some other games wouldn't play (Secret Mario Chronicles), because they were way too slow. And desktop effects etc. didn't work.
On Internet I found this error, but only in 2008 and earlier. It could sometimes be solved by editing xorg.conf. But I don't have an xorg.conf, and I have no idea where it's today hidden.
I installed the recommended nvidia driver version 173 (out of the menu). When I finally dared to install version 96, things were more of less solved. Since I'm no expert in Linux at all, I was afraid to do that because it was not recommended.
Now it looks like fonts stay the same, desktop effects are working, fonts are not ugly anymore, the Out of Range error is gone, Secret Mario Chronicles is working etc.
Only thing is the screen flickers a bit after playing Galaga, Einstein and Trackballs (and maybe more, didn't try that out).
I don't know if the problem is with the programs or with the driver, but something is wrong, I guess.
I mainly write this because it may help somebody else. And maybe my solution is completely wrong and somebody can direct me to a better solution.
