[solved] post upgrade issues--shut down and start up plus display settings

Hi, I posted briefly my experience doing the upgrade here:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3112050.0

Issues that might be resolved are "sleep" or "hibernate" since I changed power management settings to basically never do anything. When I left the machine alone this morning it stayed on but the screen was looking like an old TV with an out of tune picture. Jiggling the mouse fixed it. I haven't left the machine alone long enough since then to see if that is reproducible.

EDIT: under the 31-22 kernel the machine behaves normally when using standard power management settings.

    Real Issues I am having:
    1. Messages when starting (these appear and stay just long enough for me to almost write them down) then the machine boots normally:
    using kernel 31-21
    Code:
[Linux bzImage setup 0x3400, size 0x3b5220]
    [Initrd, addr=0x2f931000 size=0x797fbd]
    mount none on /dev failed
chroot cannot execute /etc/apparmor/initramfs no such file or directory
and this last time, a new one, something about a "usb_id[251] unable to access" but didn't get to write it all down.

using kernel 31-22 I just get the first two with slightly different values.

as an aside I was having the issue with the plymouth theme not showing on start up but doing:
    Code:
    sudo update-initramfs -u
    fixed it.

    Found in this thread:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111265.0

    2. Won't shut down properly when using kernel 31-21. This looks to be a somewhat common issue. I tried the suggestions from snowhog in this thread
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111478.0

    but haven't gone any further.

    3. with kernel 31-22 -- which I will have to use unless I get the shut down issue fixed the display resolution won't stick -- it goes to the default 1400x1050 -- which is why I wanted to use the kernel 31-21 since that default 1240x1028 is still possible for me to see.

Any comments on those messages on start up would be much appreciated. I will keep poking around for solutions to the display resolution.

EDIT: all in all I will be sticking with the 31-22 kernel and so far really like the "look and feel" of Lucid.

    cheers,
    ransom

Re: post upgrade issues--shut down and start up plus display settings

well, it has been downhill since my post. I have been sitting in front of this thing all day trying to -- very conservatively --fix the little niggles.

I noted that I lost the "shut down" and "restart" options from the "leave" menu. I have tried everything except the work around applications. Okay, I just, tried the widget but it only gives me lock or logout.

Also, now I am getting one of two issues when starting up (after I manage to shut down) in 31-22
-either a totally whacked out display, all kinds of vertical lines and so on or
-the Kubuntu screen (with the little dots under it) and it just hangs there

I can get into the system "normally" under 31-21 although I get the purple Ubuntu screen on the way in and still no shut down or restart options.

EDIT: :P okay fixed the shut down start up options by re-enabling that in the session manager. --I had unchecked all that at one point when I was trying to fix it and meant to reenable after a reboot but got caught up in the other issues. So one down!

but still I am not giving up yet!

Getting ready to mark this as solved so a quick status. I am sticking with kernel 31-22 until a new one is released so my comments only apply to that one.

      1. I figured out that the things i am seeing on start-up
      Code:
[Linux bzImage setup 0x3400, size 0x3b5220]
      [Initrd, addr=0x2f931000 size=0x797fbd]
are just part of the boot process.

      2. Shut down issues resolved, I apologise, I do not remember exact fix.

      3. screen resolution - had this problem with karmic and jaunty and did one of the workarounds (dont remember, I think it was xorg.conf not xrandr ) I have decided to go the route of someone else on this forum, for now, and just set it each time I log in.

I really like the look and feel of lucid and upgraded kde to 4.4.3 following Snowhogs instructions here
      http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111711.0

Now I am going to go learn how to post bug reports because I do think the resolution setting issue needs resolution!

      cheer, ransom
