    Ethernet Card Failure

I am writing in from India and have the following problem. I was earlier running 9.04 and just did a CD upgrade to 10.04. Following this, my Compaq laptop is unable to recognise an ethernet connection. Am using a Netgear modem with BSNL broadband. I've gone through network manager but am unable to hook on. Please advice, as I'm unable to get back on the net for any upgrades and communication. Thanks

    Re: Ethernet Card Failure

Okay so I haven't got any replies yet. The network manager just doesn't run out of the box. I went thru ifconfig found that eth0 is up with no rx or tx pkgs interrupt 26 base add 0xe000. I also used nano /etc/network/interfaces and edited it to
    Auto eth0
    Iface eth0 inet dhcp

    Still am offline

And the eth0 flag is set to up

Ethtools is not installed and since wired net is down I cannot do an apt-get

      Re: Ethernet Card Failure

I know nothing about your modem, but I think that network manager is not so bad as it used to be and it is able at least to recognize manually set ip addresses and dns servers. Sometimes it can set ip addresses with dhcp, it is only necessary to set dns servers manually.
/etc/network/interfaces were used in the past to set dns servers manually (not to force dhcp) when network manager didn't work at all.

Well I don't know. I have been going thru all forums inc linux, deb, fedora etc. Nothing has solved the problem. Am planning to try loading windows7 tomorrow to see if it works.

          Re: Ethernet Card Failure

Installing windows7 takes you more than to find out dns server numbers from your net provider or from your college and try it out in five minutes. Of course, if your problem is only that you are waiting that your network sets up automatically throw dhcp.

            Re: Ethernet Card Failure

If nothing I'll get to know whether the ethernet card works. I loaded Lenny last night and it said that it could not set up DHCP server. Since the other computers on that network are running internet on windows successfully I can get to know if there is a card problem. Lpsi!grep shows the card works

              Re: Ethernet Card Failure

I think the only thing you will find out is, that network manager in Windows is able to set DNS servers via DHCP while Kubuntu Lucid and Lenny is not. I did the same tests with Ubuntu Jaunty and SLAX and both were able to set my DNS servers via DHCP, too. It is well known for years that Kubuntu default network manager is not very good, but it takes five minutes to solve, when one knows the way.

IP adresses of DNS servers look like this
              Code:
              172.21.2.100,172.21.2.101
I think that similar twenty digits is all what blocks you from your network.

                Re: Ethernet Card Failure

Thanks the hassle is that the office net uses a router that automatically sets up the DHCP and DNS server. Tried windows yesterday and it ran slick. Am reloading with Ubuntu 10.04 and see if it works out of the box. The only thing is the Kde gui is much prettier than gnome

PS how do you set up the DNS when your router automatically applies addresses?

                    Re: Ethernet Card Failure

If you succeed with Ubuntu, you can install Kde desktop from it. I tried now Ubuntu Jaunty live CD for you and I was forced to set DNS servers manually. Sorry for wrong information. I remember SLAX for sure, but it is not a distro to live with, only to repair something from live CD.

There are five numbers, which looks like ip addresses, some of them I think you can let set automatically: IP addresss, subnet mask and gateway, but can be set manually, too.

Then there are maybe two DNS servers, which can be set automatically, but it looks like you must set them manually. Here DNS servers are the same for the same network in the whole area, so at least net provider knows them. Maybe can be read from the router or from some papers, I don't remember. Definitely can be read from net connected Windows in neigbourhood with some program.

Phew. Went back to 9.04, installed and got online thru wireless networking. Then went in for a system upgrade. Update manager promised only 9.10 upgrade but then failed exiting with code 127. What is code 127?

                        Re: Ethernet Card Failure

Some users don't trust in upgrades and use fresh install every time to minimize problems. You have still the option to do fresh install and try to set the network manually as I was talking about the whole thread.

I can't help you with code 127, maybe some other guy.

                          Re: Ethernet Card Failure

The problem I'm facing is that the fresh install of 10.04 is just failing to pickup my hardware. Ultimately I've been forced to go in for upgrading instead of reinstalling
