    [solved] [sort of] Turn off firefox/thunderbird sounds... should be easy?

    I have a feeling i'm going to be embarrassed by this one but:

    9.10->10.04 upgrade, had all the sounds turned off in 9.10 just fine, but now firefox and thunderbird give me the "bongo drum trill" sound every time they pop up an alert (e.g. when trying to start firefox when it's already running).

    Under system settings/Notifications i've disabled all sounds (player settings / "no audio output", system bell is off, etc etc).

    I looked through about:config for "sound" and "alert", nothing seemed relevant.

    Looked through gconf-editor, found desktop/gnome/sound, relevant stuff seems off (enabled_esd is checked). There are a variety of others in there... maybe one of them is the answer?

    Searched the forums, searched the web... maybe using the wrong key words?

    Thanks for any tips!

      Never did figure out a way to do it through GUI prefs in KDE, Gnome, gconf-editor, about:config, KDE gtk settings, etc etc. Somewhere something is ignoring the gnome prefs to not make noise and using this gnome sound... /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/dialog-question.ogg is the file in question (system-ready.ogg is a link to this file as well).

      Eventually i just had to do this:

      $ sudo mv /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/dialog-question.ogg /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/_dialog-question.ogg

      Ah, sweet silence. :-)
