[solved] Problems with nepomuk, huge lag

I didn't even know that such a service exist before upgrade. But then I upgraded and the whole system seemed to be very laggy. I couldn't even scroll my text documents nor web pages properly. Then I noticed that there are 6 nepomukservice processes and one of them used over 400MB memory. I killed all of them and the nepomukserver and then my system started to work many times faster!

So the question is, do I need the nepomukserver? And why it is so damn slow?

Do you need it? No. When it starts for the first time, it indexes your users /home directory to build it's database. If you have a lot of files in your users /home directory, this can (initially) take some time. Once the database index is built, then Nepomuk/Strigi actually doesn't impact the normal running of your system.

Thanks! Now I know something what it does and it seems that it's not slowing the system anymore. Probably the indexing had some issues.

If for some reason that happens once again, you can disable several of its features by going to System Settings > Advanced > Desktop Search > Basic Settings and unchecking Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop.
