    sound levels

I can set my sound levels so I can play CDs and DVDs at a comfortable listening volume, but the music played at the start and shutdown of Kubuntu is always at maximum volume regardless of how I set the sound level. Is there something else I can tweak to avoid playing the intro and shutdown tunes at max volume ?

And you've checked the Master and PCM channel slider settings in Kmix (speaker icon in the System Tray)?

Now I feel really stupid ! Of course clicking on the icon in the tray brings up the PCM slider - whereas you need to click on the Mixer button and then adjust the Master slider. Many thanks for the advice.
