Yes I did. I printed them out and I did the 1st part and it seemed to install fine. But after the restart it would not start. I'm on the newly fresh install of 10.04 now. Did exactly as described above and it went fine. I will try the 2nd install of the nvidia driver and see what happens. Heck, I've got nothing to lose now....

Re: Video won't start after upgrade

Ok. I completely reinstalled 10.04 from scratch. Followed dibl's instructions exactly and it still will not install the nvidia driver. A pop-up comes up during boot and says it was unable to start the nvidia module. I checked the log and this was the only thing I can see wrong...

        NVIDIA: calling KBUILD...
        test -e include/linux/autoconf.h -a -e include/config/auto.conf || ( \
        echo; \
echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
        echo " include/linux/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are mis
        sing."; \
echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it
        ."; \
        echo; \
        /bin/false)

Could this be the drivers fault? Maybe nvidia has to change something in the installer?

Which nvidia driver and version are you trying to use?

Re: Video won't start after upgrade

I was installing 195.36.15. I looked at the error in my previous post and searched in synaptic for kbuild, it was not installed so I installed it, then did a search for autoconf.h and it came up with "pmk" which was not installed and installed it. Went back and followed dibl's install instructions and it installed!!! I suppose "pmk" and "kbuild" must have to be installed. Are these installed on your system Snowhog?

Neither package is installed here. But, I don't have an Nvidia GPU.

                Maybe dibl can verify this?

PM him. He'll respond the next time he logs in.

In the mean time, does this mean that you've resolved your problem?

It seems so. I was thinking of trying 195.36.24 but there doesn't seem to be a big difference between them. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Ok, upon upgrading to 4.4.3 my nvidia install was screwed up again. It seems to have reverted back to the previous problem with saying the nvidia driver will not start. I Ctrl-Alt-F1 and had to install the driver again. Here is what the installer log says...

Now does this mean that everytime I upgrade KDE I'm going to have to reinstall my nvidia driver? What is KDE installing that is causing this?
