    Fan very noisy after installing 10.04 (HP s5325uk)

    Hi,

    Just installed 10.04 on my HP s5325uk (Intel Core i3 530), but unfortunately the fan is very noisy and seems to run on full speed. The fan is always noisy during booting but as soon as Windows 7 starts, it slows down considerably, just not when kubuntu starts.

    I'm a bit careful when I'm dealing with manually adjusting fan speeds, so I hope you can help me.

    sensors gives:

    Adapter: ISA adapter
    in0: +1.67 V
    in1: +1.67 V
    in2: +1.62 V
    fan1: 1193 RPM
    fan2: 866 RPM
    fan3: 0 RPM ALARM
    temp1: +37.8°C (high = +70.0°C, hyst = +60.0°C)
    temp2: +8.0°C (high = +100.0°C, hyst = +85.0°C) sensor = Intel PECI
    temp3: +39.6°C (high = +100.0°C, hyst = +85.0°C)

    My CPU was going crazy, causing my fan to go a bit crazy, until I disabled Nepomuk. Check your cpu usage and if virtuoso-t is using a high % of cpu then this could be the problem for you as well. It only happened on one of my computers.

      Hi,

      Thanks for the info. I looked at the processes and found virtuoso-t, although it didn't have a high CPU usage. Killing the process didn't help either.

      How can I disable Nepomuk? Or is there another solution?

        You can just disable Nepomuk from running.

        K > System Settings > Advanced > Desktop Search > Basic Settings and uncheck both items.
        K > System Settings > Advanced > Service Manager > Startup Services click on Nepomuk Search Module, click on Stop, uncheck Nepomuk Search Module and click Apply.
        Windows no longer obstructs my view.

          Thanks, just tried it!

          Unfortunately the fan is still on full speed. The System Monitor shows that there is no big CPU load.

          Could it be that 10.04 doesn't get along well with my hardware?

            FWIW I seem to have the same issue on an older HP (Compaq) n6000 laptop since upgrading to 10.04. Actually the fan was loud on 9.10 as well, but seems to be even worse since upgrading. It sometimes sounds like a jet is about to take off!
