Ok so the latest update fixes the borked splash screen. Something is left in a bad state however...after the splash screen, X/KDM attempts to start and fails. An X-server with a broken resolution that appears to wrap around one side of my display starts with an error dialog claiming I don't have an xorg.conf file. Of course, I do.
If I disable the splash screen in grub's menu.lst and reboot, the problem goes away...X/KDM starts just fine. Ergo, the problem is the splash screen/framebuffer crap.
I can't be bothered to wait for Canonical to fix this so it's just as easy to disable splash in menu.lst.
