Kubuntu 10.04 - really very slow

For the rest, it is not all that bad here. But after 24+ hours of a running system with a really unresponsive desktop, and still loads of 1.5 and above, and almost continuous 100% CPU usage on a dual-core, 2 GB of RAM, SATA 7200; without doing *anything*, I had to shut down Strigi (which didn't help much), and finally all Nepomuk.
I wonder why Kubuntu 10.04 was shipped with a totally crappy file indexing system, that uses a multitude of resources more than Firefox and Thunderbird; turned on.
Were I a layperson, I'd already trashed the install CD of Kubuntu. And with good reason. After installation, the system needs to work. Here, with Strigi and Nepomuk on, I can type a whole sentence into a terminal screen (!!), and it shows only some time after the last full stop.

Do you have an Nvidia graphics card by chance?

10.04 ran very slow for me initially, too, and a view of the process list showed that Nepomuk was responsible. You can disable it, of course, but I found that once the initial indexing is done, it quiets down substantially. Now I don't notice it at all.

Yes, and what does this mean? What could/should I do?

There is a thread here concerning a memory leak that affects certain Nvidia cards - IIRC.
