10.04 broke my kubuntu, how to fix?

Maybe someone will know how to get my kubuntu setup working with 10.04.
It worked perfectly with 9.10, and the 10.04 network upgrade proceeded
normally until the kdm login screen. kdm starts and accepts my
password, but then kdm fails to start the KDE desktop. During the kdm
transition to the KDE desktop, when the five icons fade into view, the
desktop crashes (I surmise) as the first icon (the hard disk) fades
into view. This crash appears to restart kdm and I am kicked back to
the login screen. Repeat ad nauseam.

Hardware is a Dell Precision m6400 laptop in a docking station.
Laptop is closed and two 30" Dell displayport monitors, configured as
one logical desktop with nvidia-settings into a Twinview
configuration. But the same problem occurs when I disconnect the
external monitors and just use the LCD. Also I tried using the "nv"
and "nouveau" drivers instead of nvidia.

Any ideas on how I can start KDE?
Where can I find the relevant error messages?
Would it help to uninstall KDE and then re-install KDE?
    How would I do that?

I want to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

I've just had enormous problems with my 10.4 upgrade (see http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111350.0).

It sounds like not everything's installed correctly, so try this...
    • Hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get into a text screen, then sign in.
If KDE keeps trying to restart, type sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop to shut it down.
      Now do sudo apt-get update.
If that completes okay do sudo apt-get upgrade
      Then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Let us know how you get on!

      Hi,

Thanks, this was the first thing I tried.
So I tried it again and nothing has changed.
kdm starts ok, but the login manager never transitions
completely to the desktop, and then the kdm login manager
      comes back up.

Any others suggestions? How would I completely erase
and re-install the KDE parts of the OS?

Use your live disk to fix log into the Grub2 file on the live disk and take it from there.

OK, but what is the fix?

computer boots, starts X and runs kdm, and only has trouble
transitioning from kdm login screen to KDE desktop.
not sure at all that the problem is X, may just be KDE config files.
how do I delete and re-install KDE from 10.04?

Assuming that your network connection is established, when at the KDM login screen, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in to the console. From there, have you tried:

            Code:
            sudo dpkg --configure -a
            then:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get update
            then:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
            Then reboot:
            Code:
            sudo shutdown -r now
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Sounds like the exact problem I had with Lucid. When I did the network update, I didn't realize I was getting Ubuntu 10, not Kubuntu 10. If I recall, Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop, so maybe your network update didn't install KDE. The cure was to login at a terminal (not the GUI login screen), and do:

              sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

I guess this installs the KDE desktop. Anyway, it worked.

IF you were running Kubuntu Karmic when you did the OS upgrade, over the 'net, you don't upgrade to Ubuntu (Gnome). I'm sorry, but that just doesn't happen.

                  Thanks for all the responses.
Yes, the network works, and X works (but only for the kdm login screen),
so I can work in text mode and none of the above suggestions helped.

In desperation, I added the (default) gnome desktop to my kubuntu machine,
and was able to get into the gnome safety desktop via gdm. i regenerated
xorg.conf files and rebooted a few times. now the full gnome works but
                  kde/kdm still does not not.

i tried purging then reinstalling kubuntu-desktop but that did not help.
is there a way to completely purge (then reinstall) all kde packages?

                  thanks,
                  charlie

Then how do you explain that every command I issue to check my version says UBUNTU?
                    lsb_release -a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
                    Arch x86_64
                    uname -a Linux 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP.

Yet Kate and Konqueror Help about KDE both show 4.4.2 (KDE 4.4.2)
The start up screen is purple and shows Ubuntu 10.04.

Reran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. No change still says Ubuntu.
I didn't have any kubuntu folder in Plymouth until I ran the update. Now there is a Kubuntu-logo folder.

Everything seems to be working but any program which is supposed to identify the OS says I'm now running UBUNTU which I never ever downloaded or installed on any of my multiple PCs.

Home system is a HP Touchsmart running Intel Core 2 Duo P7550. I'm running Grub .9 on a separate partition and chainloading the partition where Kubuntu is located. I'm baffled.

I just would like to remind that the first aid to this problem is to check with live CD if there is enough space on Kubuntu partition.

                        Have you tried:

                        1. Renaming the /home/.kde/share/config folder and logging out and back in again.

                        2. If you were running KDE 4.3 before the upgrade, it's quite possible that the package plasma desktop did not get installed. So you should check and install it if it's not already there.

                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop
                        HTH

It seems I have the same problem.

I've tried everything that is mentioned in this post and nothing works so far.

My guess is that some package is missing or a config file is missing/incomplete. But since I can't find any log about it, I'll have to use other way to get my desktop working again. So I'll ask the same question : how can i remove/purge kde and reinstall it ?

By upgrading was it over the internet, or with the alternate CD or have you done a fresh install, whilst retaining your home directory?

I upgraded over the net. I'm pretty sure it's important to mention that my desktop completely froze during near the end of the upgrade. I hit reset after waiting for about half an hour.
