    No desktop and no connection on Kubuntu 10.4 LTS

    Hello everybody, I'm an Italian user who asked on Italian forum but didn't get any answers.
    So, I'm here. This morning I've upgraded from Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.4.

    Unfortunately something goes wrong. After grub, on loading Lucid, I get:
    Code:
    [Linux-bzimage, setup=0x3400, size=0x3d4860]
    [Initrd, addr=0x37857000, size=0x798a22]
    Never happened before...

    However, I give user and pass and Kubuntu starts...I have only the background, no desktop directory and plasma menu.
    I can't do nothing...
    I see here that It could be the upgrading from KDE 4.3 to 4.4.
    I had 4.3 and didn't upgraded to 4.4, but how can I solve this problem if I can't access to internet in this situation?

    I tried to upgrade with "apt-get upgrade" and "sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop" but can't download the packets.
    Hope you can help me, and sorry if my English is bad...

    Are you getting to the KDM login screen, or a CLI prompt? You say you can type in your user name and password.

    What manufacture/model of graphics card do you have?
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.
    Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

      Sorry, maybe I didn't explained well...
      - In the grub I choose kubuntu kernel, and get the message I quoted above;
      - I can log in, so I give my user and pass;
      - After logged in, desktop should load, but I see only background, no plasma menù, no plasma bars, no desktop window;

      I can't do nothing, so I have to switch to CLI mode to give sudo commands, but connection doesn't work (kubuntu problem, my router works).

      VIA Unichrome Pro IGP, but it's not the problem.

        I ran into something that sounds similar after doing a dist-upgrade.
        'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop' fixed my problem

        I was running Compiz prior to the upgrade, and it's since broken. But the above command got be back to using kwin.

          Ok, but apt-get doesn't work because, in this situation, I haven't the connection for downloading packets.

          How can I do?

            oops.. sorry, missed that part. Hm. Could you boot with a liveCD? You could prove your connection is good... and then download/copy over the kubuntu-desktop packages to your disk.
