No Internet After Upgrade - -82578DM - Solved

This involves any Intel controller of the 82578DM type. Mine was an integrated controller in an Intel DP55KG motherboard. Originally running 10.04 32 bit system when a kernel upgrade did in my eth0 port. Finally downloaded the 64 bit version .iso and ran the live CD version without problems. Installed the system and downloaded the latest bug and security upgrades and again, on reboot, the eth0 port disappeared. Being a little more than pissed at this point I did a search on the integrated 82578DM Intel MB controller. The following link is typical -

I immediately stuck an Intel EXPI9301CTBLK NIC, which I had, in the machine and poof, all problems disappeared. What is especially cruel about this incident is the "live" CD operation is suppose to verify hardware compatibility. IT DOES NOT! In my view, this problem is not isolated to Kubuntu.

I really do like Kubuntu a lot except for the networking interface and parts of grub2. I would certainly like to suggest that the responsible networking programmers apply for jobs at Microsoft. Their talents for screwing things up would be more in line with that software line than anything on the Linux side.

Before you run off to Realtek, be it known that two weeks ago I lost Internet access to a ECS MB that was setup dual boot. In that case a rather ancient Netgear NIC replaced the Realtek NIC and restored connectivity on the Linux side but didn't play with Windoze 7. As of right now the following card should work with both. Lets hope they do not further screwup the code.
