    Network hangs AND dhclient ... renewal in 1680 seconds

    I have two computers, one running Kubuntu 9.10, the other WIndows 7, both connected by ethernet to a Netopia ADSL router. In the last few days, I have started having network hangs 1 to 3 times a day. When it happens, I cannot even connect to the router at 192.168.1.254. In general, I have to stop both machines and restart the router to get back to normal operation.

    I have taken to running a Konsole window with "tail -f syslog". I am seeing the following incomprehensible (to me) series of messages:

    Aug 14 10:10:03 jon-desktop dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.13 on eth0 to 192.168.1.254 port 67
    Aug 14 10:10:03 jon-desktop dhclient: DHCPACK of 192.168.1.13 from 192.168.1.254
    Aug 14 10:10:03 jon-desktop dhclient: bound to 192.168.1.13 -- renewal in 1508 seconds.

    It's not always 1680, but near that: 1395. 1466, 1569. And it gives the time to the next message, at least to the nearest minute. I have no idea if this is related to my network problem.

    Also in syslog, I see the following messages which seem to occur at the moment of the problem:

    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop kernel: [12210.334293] atl1c 0000:03:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Down
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop vmnetBridge: Removing interface eth0 index:2
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop NetworkManager: <info> (eth0): carrier now OFF (device state 3)
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop NetworkManager: <info> (eth0): device state change: 3 -> 2 (reason 40)
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop NetworkManager: <info> (eth0): deactivating device (reason: 40).
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop kernel: [12210.340930] bridge-eth0: disabling the bridge
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop vmnetBridge: Stopped bridge eth0 to virtual network 0.
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop kernel: [12210.352026] bridge-eth0: down
    Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop kernel: [12210.352036] bridge-eth0: detached

    I cannot imagine that this signifies something good.

    Anybody have any ideas what I can do here? Maybe buy a new router?

    Thanks in advance.

    hi joneall,

    did you check the lease time of the dhcp-server on your router?
    did you check the pool-size of the dhcp-server on your router?

    do you have a switch in you're network or are both pcs directly connected with the router?

    if both connected directly, it is possible, that you're router is defective.. check warnings/errors on the routers systemlog file.

    exit

      Does the Win 7 machine hang at the same time? If YES, then the problem would appear to be with the ADSL router. If NO, then I would focus on that first error message:

      Aug 13 10:59:38 jon-desktop kernel: [12210.334293] atl1c 0000:03:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Down
      The kernel is saying there's nothing coming from network interface card (NIC).

        I have no idea how to find the lease time or the pool-size. Apparently, three is a dhclient.leases file somewhere, but I cannot find it. The relevant (non-commented parts of my dhclient.conf file are

        jon@jon-desktop:/etc/dhcp3$ grep -v ^# dhclient.conf

        option rfc3442-classless-static-routes code 121 = array of unsigned integer 8;

        send host-name "<hostname>";
        request subnet-mask, broadcast-address, time-offset, routers,
        domain-name, domain-name-servers, domain-search, host-name,
        netbios-name-servers, netbios-scope, interface-mtu,
        rfc3442-classless-static-routes, ntp-servers;

        The problem does seem to happen at (or about) the same time on both computers. At least, I have never seen one work when the other didn't. So I think I will go with the assumption that the router may have suffered from a recent summer storm. Especially since it has not been on an anti-surge plug for the last few months. I'm thinking of getting a Linksys WAG120N. Any idea if that is a good one?

        Thanks for your help.

          i think to, that with a new router, the problem should be solved! But i don't know what u want to do in you're network... this linksys product seems ok for home and 2 normal desktops.

          regards,

            What else is there (for a home installation) aside from maybe a shared printer? What do you recommend/have?

              I have posted another question based on this thread at

              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...113282.new#new

              It's about the dchp lease time. At least, I think that's what it is.

              Thanks again for your help.

                I prefere zyxel and cisco network products... here in Switzerland, zyxel products are very widely used.

                U can use a printserver or share the printer from a server or a desktop pc, but the disadvantage of the last point is, that the pc who shares the printer, must stay online if someone wants to print.

                if u want to put a server in u're network to share websites and other things... check that you're router, who u want to buy, has a firewall and different interfaces (trusted - lan, optional - dmz)... because it's a lot saftier!

                read about networks and u'll see, what kind of options u will have!

                best regards, exit
