    [SOLVED] Wired networking not working

    Hi all,

My new installation of 10.04 connected fine wirelessly but now at a hotel I can't connect with the wire.

Looked as previous solutions but none of them helped. Network fine in XP partition so I know hardware is fine.

Network Manager icon in tray on mouseover says "Unmanaged" and right mouse click says "Network Management disabled".

    ifconfig gives me:

    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:785 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:785 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:60966 (60.9 KB) TX bytes:60966 (60.9 KB)

so I'm not getting IP address.

Package Manager can't connect so I downloaded WICD tar.gz from XP partition which I can see from Kubuntu but don't know how to run it.

    Appreciate any suggestions.

      Hi Detonate,

Liked your note on networking problems.

      ifconfig -a gives me :

        Re: Wired networking not working

No, eth0 is woprking and has an IP Address.

Try this in a terminal and see if you get any errot messages.

        Code:
        sudo service network-manager stop
        sudo rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
        sudo service network-manager start

          Solved: Wired networking not working

          Thanks that did it.

I'm getting the wireline and wireless working seamlessly.

So by stopping and restarted the Network Manager, removing its current state we're able to get a reset.

Curious why would this be an issue originally.

          Thanks for your help.

I turned off my machine and when I booted back up I had this problem again, though now I how to get around it.

I'm not sure if this happens each time I power down or at some random interval when the network manager flakes out.

Re: [SOLVED] Wired networking not working

Network Manager is just plain unreliable. Always has been. It is written for Red Hat systems, not Debian systems. I recommend dumping it.

Hopefully you have a wire somewhere to plug in. Then you can do all the networking.

With my laptop plugged into a wired outlet, I personally dumped Network-Manager-KDE (and autoremoved the associated components) then installed Wicd Network Manager:

              sudo apt-get remove network-manager-kde
              sudo reboot
              sudo apt-get autoremove

              sudo apt-get install wicd

              Then everything worked for me.

Thanks that seems to work though I'll only believe it after several times.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I've wanted to get rid of Network Mgr for awhile but hadn't gotten around to finding out how to replace it with WICD.

Re: [SOLVED] Wired networking not working

perspectoff's method is a lot easier than mine because after the reboot the apps dependent on network-manager-kde become orphaned and "sudo apt-get autoremove" removes them without having to know specifically what their names are.

I would, however, recommend a slight change in sequence. IF you are using a wireless to connect to the internet and do not have a cat5 ethernet cable handy to connect from the back of your cable modem or wireless to your eth0 port, removing the network manager and rebooting will leave you without a wireless network tool and hence a network connection.

                  I would recommend this sequence:
sudo apt-get install wicd (which gets wicd BEFORE you tear down you wireless connection)
                  sudo apt-get remove network-manager-kde
                  sudo reboot
                  sudo apt-get autoremove
Then run wicd and configure it.

The wicd icon may not appear in the system tray until the next reboot but you can still get a connection. That small change will prevent the necessity of having to use an eth cable to install wicd after you've removed knm.

Re: [SOLVED] Wired networking not working

Followup - I had problems connecting to my network after reboot with a bad password error coming each time.

Found the problem was that network manager hadn't completely uninstalled even after following the above steps. From following an Ubuntu discussion here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1498035 I redid the remove and a WICD restart which seems to be working (crossing fingers).

                    sudo apt-get remove network-manager
                    sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart
