I would start by looking in you'r BIOS settings for an option to enable/disabel on bord wirless.
you can usualey get to this by repetedley hiting one of eather esc,F1,F2 or delete wile starting the box.
it will be one or the other but not a sequense
but some time's it's even more obscure and a google of you make and model# may be requierd.
During the first couple of seconds after you turn on your computer you can hit a key (F2 or F8 or F11) that brings up the BIOS configuration screen. On that screen you can navigate to your internal wifi and toggle it to the disabled mode. Then there is an option to leave the BIOS configuration screen and save it at the same time. I can't tell you exactly because I don't know what the name and model of your machine. If you have a manual for it you can look it up, otherwise you can search the web for a PDF of your manual, if one exists.

BIOS is easy enough to get to. IBM made it really easy. There is an "Access IBM" button on the laptop. Hit that while the computer is loading the bios and it prompts you as to how you want to interrupt the normal boot up.
I would also look for key board functon keys for this, even in Linux this should turn off/on the device, though I can't be sure if that holds settings between boots. Plus even if the device is on, it doesn't have to be set to autoconnect
The keyboard shortcut still works, but when I use it, the PCMCIA card is also turned off. I have the internal WiFi turned off in BIOS. That way I can run hard-line, or my PCMCIA card, so my network can run at G instead of B.
