but I finally got the thing working after messing around with it for a couple hours. If you're looking for a reasonably secure, fast remote control solution FreeNX is highly recommended. It was worth the effort.
Got custom keys working on both desktop and netbook and an SSH port forwarded to the desktop PC so I can control it from anywhere. So far the results are impressive.
