Lucid and Windows Shares

I have both a Kubuntu and an Ubuntu box (separate). When I first upgraded the systems to Lucid my windows shares and shared printers worked with no problems. The systems have all of the latest updates. Recently, don't know exactly when it started, I have been unable to access the windows shares (folders and printers) on either system.

I'm not sure what I should be looking for. My user name and password is the same on all systems, but when I try to access the shares from the Lucid machines nothings happens. Seems to be a permissions issue and I am lost so far as where to look. I'm not a complete dummy, but neither am I a guru. I would greatly appreciate some assistance. Thanx.

I am a little confused. Which is a normal state for me. Are you needing help on sharing between two Lucid systems or is there a Windows machine in the mix?

I'm sorry if I confused you. I have lost ability to access my windows 7 shares from the Lucid machines. When I first upgraded to Lucid everything work great. Somewhere along the way something changed and I'm not sure what to look for. Don't know if problem is with windows or lucid. Seems to be a password authorization or permissions issue.

Sorry, but I can't help with that. I have not used Samba in a very long time, and never with Windows 7. All my networking these days is Ubuntu to Ubuntu.

Without more info on what's changed to cause this, seems you'll have to start from scratch. There's several posts and how to's on setting up samba on this forum.

I gather that you have a shared folder on the Windows 7 machine and you want to access it from your Kubuntu machine. Is that right?

Kubuntu includes the Samba client software in the default install. There is no need to install anything else. It should work right out of the box.

Whether or not a username or password is required to access the share depends on the configuration of the Windows 7 machine and the share itself. If you are being prompted for a username or password to access the Windows 7 shared folder then that means the Windows 7 server is configured to require such.

I have a shared the "Public" folder of a Vista machine on my network. Clients may access it with an empty username string and no password at all. Knowing that this works for me may not help you much though.

If we are to help you then we will need to know exactly how you are trying to access the shares. What exactly did you do that used to work before? What exactly doesn't work now? What does work now?

What user name and password? Your login name and password for your Kubuntu machine could be different from your Samba client username and password.

The word permissions can have different meanings between Windows and *nix systems depending on the context. Don't forget that setting permissions for the local filesystem of the server is not the same as setting permissions for network clients. The two can influence each other though.
