    Broadcom BCM4306 wireless problem

    I have an old Dell Inspiron 1150 that I added an internal wireless card to with a clean install of 10.04. I have installed fwcutter and wicd. I had it working last night, even after restarting the computer.
    This morning it won't connect. wicd see's my wireless but says either "unable to get ip address" or "bad password". I have verified the password is correct and I'm using WEP.

    I'm not sure what to try next.

    It's a common problem.

    Use apt-get or Synaptic and completely removed the following packages:
    modemmanager
    network-manager
    network-manager-openconnect
    network-manager-openvpn
    network-manager-pptp
    network-manager-vpnc
    knm-runtime
    network-manager-kde
    plasma-widget-networkmanagement
    and install the following packages, if you haven't already:

    python-urwid (0.9.9.1-1)
    python-wicd (1.7.0-2)
    wicd (1.7.0-2)
    wicd-cli (1.7.0-2)
    wicd-curses (1.7.0-2)
    wicd-daemon (1.7.0-2)
    wicd-gtk (1.7.0-2)
    Then, reboot.

    KNetworkManager and wicd interfere with each other.

      I removed/added all you suggested and got mixed results. I also made sure wicd is 1st in the network management backend setting. To rule out a flaky internal wireless card, I tried a pcmcia wireless adapter again with mixed results. I reset my router and modem also and tested the wireless from another laptop and the wireless network is fine.

        First, make sure you didn't accidentally turn your wireless off by sliding switch or clicking a button on your PC. My wife did that unknowingly with here thumb, sliding the wireless switch on the front of her Acer laptop to the left, shutting off the wireless. Mine has a similar switch but also has a led next to it to indicate if the wireless is on or off.

        If the switch is not the problem I'll assume you installed the fwcutter app from the repository by clicking on the KMenu --> System --> Hardware Drivers menu option.

        look at the output of dmesg for any listings containing "ssb" and/or "bcm43xx"

        If you can't still can't connect open a Konsole and issue

        sudo iwlist scanning
        and

        iwconfig

          Yes I'm sure the switch is on for wireless and fwcutter is installed and enabled.
          I was connected to both wired and wireless but now wireless doesn't shows up in wicd.

          dmesg shows no occurances of "ssb" or "bcm43". Checked it with OOwriter.

            Two wireless devices, eh? Curious, which is the onboard chip and which is the pcmcia device?

            Regardless, wlan1 is down, and obviously is not configured or configured to look like an ethernet connection (which has happened to me also), but wlan0 is working and showing APs.

            Open the wicd preferences and look for the textbox for wireless devices. I'd wager it is showing wlan1 or it is blank. Fill it in with wlan0 and save it. Then retry the connection. IF that doesn't work reboot and retry.

            If that doesn't work then show me the output of the lsmod command, the contents of the /etc/network/interfaces file, and the contents of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

            The combination of b43 and ssb have replaced bw43xx and I suspect that if you examine the output of lsmod you may see both bw & ssb and bw43xx loaded. Or, perhaps, ssb isn't listed, or it is listed with bw43xx but b43 is missing. In otherwords, the Broadcom sta driver and the b43 driver are fighting for the wlan0. Your wlan1 is probably adding mayhem to the mess. Can you disable it in the BIOS?

              OK GreyGeek I removed the pcmcia card and now only have the internal wireless card installed. It is wlan0. Now wicd connects everytime but no web pages come up. I launch firefox and it says "Waiting for www.google.com..." in the bottom left but never goes any further. Same thing with any web page. It just never come up but comes up fine on wired. I can ping my router or www.google.com just fine.

                Successfully pinging an IP address but being unable to display a web page using the domain name usually means that that /etc/resolv.conf is empty or misconfigured.

                What are the contents of your /etc/resolv.conf?

                    That resolv.conf looks good.

                    You are still getting "either "unable to get ip address" or "bad password""?

                    As I said before, my experience with that error is that Knetworkmanager or one of its components is still installed, especially knm-runtine. Check again to make sure that all of KNM is removed and purged, including config files. Also, remove all of wicd. And, remove ALL of the sta or other BCM4306 files that are installed, including config files. Then follow the instructions at this website: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 for your bcm4306 chip.

                    Then reboot. Plug in an ethernet cable from your router or modem, to get a network connection. Install wicd. Configure it with your essid, connection type and password and set it to automatically connect to that essid. Reboot.
