Huawei E160e modem won't show up in Kubuntu 10.04 64bit

I have just updated an Asus Eeepc 1001HA netbook to Kubuntu 10.04 Netbook remix and have just got a Virgin Australia prepaid mobile wireless Huawei E160e modem. lsusb shows it as an E220 HSDPA modem, E270 HSDPA/HSUPA modem.
It shows in network manager as ttyUSB0. It works in Windows so have put in the APN "virginbroadband" and number "*99#" which is in the windows connect properties. I have also on the PPP tab only PAP checked. When I click to connect it says activating and then drops out. I have found a lot of forums saying it works fine with Ubuntu so downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook and it is the same. Any ideas as I think this modem is used by a lot of Australian mobile broadband ISPs.

Re: Huawei E160e modem won't connect

Fixed. It now works with no explanation.
Apparently these things have a mind of their own. After trying for hours last night and searching the net and downloading Ubuntu, I checked this morning and with the settings that I had used last night it connects with both Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit and 10.04 netbook. Like I said they have a mind of their own and must have needed a good nights sleep.

I have this working on an Asus Eee pc with netbook remix 10.04 and a Toshiba laptop with 9.10 64bit so decided to update to 10.04. Did a clean install and it will not find the modem. Mobile broadband stays greyed out in network manager. But if I boot off the 9.10 live cd it will find it, mobile broadband changes and I can set it up. Is there some package missing in 10.04? I installed all that I could find for mobile broadband but it is still the same.
