[SOLVED] Sound works but microphone does not

    Hello,

Another issue (I hope it is the last cause when this works my needs will be satisfied) -
installed kubuntu 10.4 amd64 on toshiba satellite c660D-14E.

As microphone was not working in Skype, we tried to check whether it is recongnized by the system.

    - output via Speaker and Headset is good
    - voice recorder in SKYPE records nothing
    - mic is not muted, volume on full power in KMix

Applications -> Settings -> System Settings -> Multimedia ->Audio Capture

shows HDA ATI SB (ALC269 Analog)

    However, test is disallowed .
A test is allowed if I go to Audio Output (not capture) and works fine.

    >lspci -v | less

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)

    > cat /proc/asound/card?/codec#* | grep Codec

Could anyone suggest where to go from now? Thanx in advance

Play with your Input Source selections and the Capture channel tik-boxes in kmix.

      Thanx for the reply.

Tried that already many times with different configurations. No effect...
Also tried alsamixer. No effect as well.

I believe there is something deeper. As mentioned in the post - when I go to settings, I am not allowed to make any audio input test. Somehow this functions is blocked.

Is there any way to check whether the driver recognizes the microphone at all.

Can it bee that a microphone is on the webcam? So Linux sees that one and does not recognize any other input. Is there anyway to check this?

Re: Sound works but microphone does not

I have a mic in the webcam and it's fine. Just took some playing around with kmix.

You might do some googling on the exact model you have and see if anyone else has an issue/fix.

Re: Sound works but microphone does not

            Just a short question -

            when I put
            lspci

            I get
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)

            The following command gives me
            cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
            Codec: Realtek ALC269

i am a bit confused, since then I went back to original windows installation and realized that
            the audio device driver is

Realtek High Definition Audio Version 6.0.1.6241

which supports Realtek audio chipsets... There everything works fine - there is a built-in microphone, which is recognized, when I put a headset with a microphone, it reacts to this action and switches to the headset microphone.

So to my primitive understanding of the issue my audio device is not from ATI but from Realtek. Or I miss something here between Realtec codec software and sound hardware...

Can it be that the device detection simply is not appropriate in kubuntu? If yes, any ideas how to start with it?

Re: Sound works but microphone does not

Tried the procedure in the link -

yes i can see how Capture in alsamixer changes when i move pavumixer:input devices

In pavumixer:configuration I cannot follow the
"Open pavucontrol, use the "Configuration" tab to confirm that both your onboard chip and your headset (or webcam, as applicable) are available. "

as no devices are indicated - only "Profile" with "analog stereo duplex", "Analog stereo input", etc...

In "input devices" I have two choices:
Internal Audio analog stereo -> this one influences Capture in alsamixer
Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo -> no reaction to anything in alsamixer

"set as fallback" option is not available
"rear mic" and "rear mic boost" channels in alsamixer also do not exist...

in any case - no microphone working yet...

The confusion about the ID of your sound chip is a little weird. The authoritative source of information about Linux sound drivers is here: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main

I'll let you look up your chip.

It sounds like you are pretty close, on your pulseaudio setup. Here is what I see on the Config tab, with my webcam plugged in:

                [img width=400 height=318]http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/3246/pavucontrol1.png[/img]

For inputs, when I set my webcam to be the active mic for Skype calls, I see this (note the "set as fallback" is on):

                [img width=400 height=318]http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/5086/pavucontrol2.png[/img]

And to use my normal speakers for the output, I see this:

Re: Sound works but microphone does not

OK, when I pull the webcam, and plug in a "typical" (Radio Shack) tabletop mic to the audio input jack on the front of my computer, it looks like your setup. There is a two-step process to get it to work right.

Step 1 -- open alsamixergui and set the "front mic" and "front mic boost" channels and turn up the levels:

                      [img width=400 height=111]http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6721/alsamixergui1.png[/img]

                      [img width=400 height=111]http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/5103/alsamixergui2.png[/img]

Step 2 -- open pavucontrol "Input", unmute the internal channel (because I had it muted to use the webcam), and turn up the volume:

                      [img width=400 height=318]http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/340/pavucontrol4.png[/img]

I noticed your pavucontrol seems to be lacking some icons -- one can wonder whether you have all of pulseaudio installed. I would try this in a terminal:

                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get update
                      Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pulseaudio paman padevchooser pavucontrol

Re: Sound works but microphone does not

Thanx again for assistance. Still does not work

I put all the images down there to see the status.
                        Just to note
1)alsamixergui shows not much so I used alsamixer on terminal (screenshots down there)
                        2) in pavucontrol I have no panel 'ports' like it is visible in your case.
                        3) there is a built-in microphone in the laptop or I just plug in an old-fashioned headphone set with a small micrphone. In both cases no reaction.
                        4) after re-installation icons do not appear in pavucontrol...
                        5) system settings window as you see below does not allow any test for input...

i just got a feeling that somewhere the microphone is not recognized as it stands nowhere... It is strange cause the output works perfect.

Your Skype setup and Systemsettings>Multimedia look correct. It must be an issue with the driver.

There are a couple of places where you can find "options" to set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

                            http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...sound+database

                            https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

                            which also refers to http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentat...dio-Models.txt

On that last link, I see an ALC269 with some options listed, like "laptop-amic" and "laptop-dmic" -- you could try those. I cannot find a specific reference to a Toshiba Satellite c660D, unfortunately.

                              Thankx for the info again.

After going so far and becoming sure that the problem is not superficial but lies somewhere deeper, I came to this thread

                              http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1555125

and followed the suggestion of jdb2 to add the repository (last post on that thread)
                              deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

                              and install modules

                              linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32 2.6.32-33.201108081603

Later change the the driver model from "basic" back to "auto" ( the default) in the alsa-base.conf file.
After reboot it worked perfectly - microphone appeared on the kmix. Pavucontrol showed that sound for input is unmuted.

Apparantly there is a bug in the alsa for lucid. As jdb2 writes
"I've attempted using basically every combination of settings in "alsamixer" that makes sense. In addition to that, I've tried adding the "options snd-hda-intel model=" parameter in "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" starting with "basic" and trying every combination of "Input Source." I've also tried the "auto", "lenovo", "toshiba" and "3stack" models, but nothing works".

                              The same was my case.

Thanx one more time and thanx for the linux community for all the support!
