Re: i had 9.10 running and have upgraded to 10.04 and now get no GUI

Do you still have a network connection? If so, please run this on the console:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
The first line will update all the software, the second one will make sure you are not missing any important packages for the kubuntu desktop. Reboot and see what happens.

Another things that could help would be to make sure there is no conflict with your xorg.conf

    Code:
    sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.back
Also: have you been using the ATI binary drivers before? The system is trying to load the open source driver, I wonder if there may be an older binary driver interfering ..

the first part of that will take approximately 30 minutes. i'll have more information when it gets done.

i installed 9.10 from a disk onto a (then) bare computer, and i didn't have any problems with the video... so i guess that means that i was "using the ATI binary drivers before", but i didn't know that that's what they were...

it's possible that there is an "older binary driver interfering", but i don't know... how to i tell?

        My pleasure !

Great, let's see what happens after the upgrade and reboot.

The "binary driver" is a closed source driver published by AMD/ATI. You need to go to the "hardware drivers" menu to activate that. If you never did, you shouldn't have it. You can test that from the console:

        Code:
        dpkg -l |grep ii |grep fglrx
If the output is empty, it is not installed. Otherwise, you can uninstall the packages from the console (using "sudo apt-get remove PACKAGE-NAME"). Sorry you are going though this, upgrades are typically painless, but it sucks when this happens! We'll get you going You hardware has fantastic linux support.

              Code:
              sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
i did this and it suggested that i do "apt-get -f install" (with no packages) to make up for the fact that there, apparently, weren't some important dependencies met, so i did, and it ended with a comment that "apt-get autoremove" should be run to remove some old packages that weren't being used any longer...

              so, i then
              Code:
              sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

              then i rebooted...

it gave me a little taste of the new splash screen, and then went completely blank... not even a cursor this time... and i can't ALT+CTRL+F1 to a command prompt.

so, i rebooted again... this time it didn't even try the splash screen... the screen just went black.

so, i rebooted again, and went into "Recovery Mode", and even that doesn't appear to work...

Ok, so not there is more clarity. The update was broken for some reason. When this happens, it is typically easiest to do a fresh install. But we can keep trying.

I am surprised that different bootups would give you different results, this is more typical of hardware problems. Do you see a bootup menu? (grub menu). Can you choose different boot options? If so, could you please try some of them and report?

if there was some way of doing this without completely wiping out all of my mail and data, i'd do it... i've spent two days trying to work around this, and it's not getting any better... :P

i do see a bootup menu, and when i went to the next kernel back (2.6.32) recovery mode does work, as does the recovery mode for every other kernel listed except the first one (2.6.35), however if i choose the "not-recovery-mode" option for any of them, i get varying degrees of bubkes...

i'm now sitting at a root prompt, and, if it helps, i've located my 10.04 install disk, which is NOT a "live" disk... :P

Re: i had 9.10 running and have upgraded to 10.04 and now get no GUI

Oh, can you please reboot on the most recent recovery mode available, use the option to boot to a root prompt with network, and run again all the apt-get commands above? Particularly, the apt-get update and dist-upgrade, and also, from there, apt-get install kubuntu-desktop just in case. I wonder if there are still broken packages. This command will take a long time but will reconfigure all packages:

                    Code:
                    sudo dpkg-reconfigure --all

If it still doesn't boot up to a graphics mode, from the recovery option, can you try "sudo service kdm restart". And see what happens.

Another idea: after you tested all above. Try editing the most recent kernel in grub on bootup:
                    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Editing Menus During Boot
Remove the options "splash" and "quiet", and see what errors you get. You may wanna try modeset=0 or modeset=1 and see what happens.

I'll be back in a little while. You are not on your own

Also, since your upgrade broke. Please post the output of this:

                      Code:
                      cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Let's make sure it is proper to 10.04!

This command will take a long time but will reconfigure all packages: sudo dpkg-reconfigure --all

If it still doesn't boot up to a graphics mode, from the recovery option, can you try "sudo service kdm restart". And see what happens.
MIRACLE! the apt-get commands - update, dist-upgrade, and install kubuntu-desktop - along with dpkg-reconfigure --all, appear to have brought me back into the land of people who have functional computers again! JAI GANESHA!

I'll be back in a little while. You are not on your own
i really appreciate your help... i am a part of a modern, electronic music "group" (it's really only two people) and i have about 12 albums of music that i could give you a sampler of, as partial repayment for all your trouble, if you'd like...

Thank you both! I am so glad we are done with this!

przxqgl, could you please edit the original message and mark it as [SOLVED] in the title?

Also: *buntu should really put the /home folder in a separate partition by default IMHO. You can do that from a liveCD:

                            http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome
                            https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pa...ng/Home/Moving

Then, in the future, if an upgrade goes belly up you can wipe the "root" partition and keep your data, but it is a bit of an advanced topic, since *buntu doesn't support it by default, so the installer doesn't do it automatically

Also: you sources look dandy. But you may want to run KPackageKit and pick a better mirror. I am using kernel.org. It's about 10 times faster than what you are using. If your broadband connection is fast, it will make a big difference

presumably this information is for those who don't have a /home directory yet, correct? how can one move their already established /home directory? i actually bought a separate 200 gb hard disk just for this purpose, and so far it has nothing but music on it, because i can't figure out how to get it to mount on bootup...
