Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Is there some kind of GUI frontend for xorg.conf that gives full access to all its power (or at least more bits than you get through the ordinary tools provided)?

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Not that I've seen but it would be nice. I think the xorg developers are focusing on trying to get it to work without the config file and the hardware companies aren't going to spend resources on a project that might benefit the competition...

I'll add it to my wish list!

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Well, I'm fine with a non-xorg.conf solution as well, but if I understand it right, what I'm trying to do requires, at the moment, xorg.conf. Correct?

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Definitely, especially since you're mixing ATI with nVidia.

So go back to re-creating your xorg.conf and lets start looking at the log. I think you should get 1 screen working right, then add in each other one, one at a time.

I'm an nVidia guy so I'd start there.

This ought to be fun - I might run out and buy a few new monitors just to play along!

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Yep, I intend to do that, although it will take a couple of days, as I need to move some stuff off that computer before I risk messing it up...

As far as I can see, no real help in the log. Suggestions?

Now, I'm going to try adding a screen from another card, just in case I need to handle screens on the same card differently.

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

OK, adding screens 2 & 3 did not work. At first, I just got a dead black screen, and it complained about this line in the log:

                Code:
                Screen "Screen2" 0 -1200
Figuring it didn't like negative coordinates, I tried changing it (and the following line from:

                Code:
                Screen "Screen2" 0 -1200
                Screen "Screen3" 1600 -1200
                to:

                Code:
                Screen "Screen2" 0 1200
                Screen "Screen3" 1600 1200

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Not sure if this still applies, but used to be that xinerama wouldn't support 3d rendering (opengl) on more than one screen. You might try remarks out that section for now. Also possibly outdated - xinerama used to require a device section for each monitor, regardless if it was the same video card or not. You just use a unique Device Identifier name.

Used to be you needed a "Server Flags" section and that's where Option "Xinerama" "True" went.

When you say "one screen working", does that mean a GUI or just console?

When you're in console mode, typing "startx" should attempt to start X and should output some error messages if it fails ( like No Screens Found) sometimes useful.

I would like to see the output of xrandr -q also.

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

I'm in a hurry now, so I'll just reply to the things I can answer/test quickly, the rest will follow later.

One screen working is with a full GUI, not just a text console.

xrandr -q (although temporarily reset to twinview for practical reasons):

                    Code:
                    Screen 0: minimum 3200 x 1200, current 3200 x 1200, maximum 3200 x 1200
                    default connected 3200x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
                      3200x1200 50.0*

Re: Can't get multimonitor to work, need assistance

Just wanted to sum up events so far:

After trying some more, I had to give up and went back to XP. I will try again in a couple of versions, but at the moment, I had to get my machine running properly, even though it saddens me to have to sink so low as to get XP.

Even more annoying, MS or nVidia has changed something, so now, I can only get one of the nVidia cards to work at the time. As soon as I install the drivers for the other card, it kills the drivers for the first (and vice versa). However, now I have 4 monitors working and can use the machine again.

I'll have to agree with Mark Twain: "Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection". I needed to get something to work now, I can make it work as I really want it to work later.
