    [SOLVED] Webcam question

I have a PS2 Eyetoy webcam which works perfectly with video4linux, but if I try to use it in skype or kopete the colors are weird (blue and orange are reversed). Anyone know why this is or how I can fix it? Are there any other video chat applications it might work better with? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 (though I plan on upgrading tomorrow).

What video/webcam driver is listed by lsmod?
What does lspci and lshw show for you wireless device?

I apologize for posting so much here, but I figure you know better what info you need than I do. I don't think it has to do with the wireless card, the program's preview functions show the odd colors too.

        Re: Webcam question

I saw no listing for a webcam in your lsmod output, and lspci did not show a webcame device.

The eyetoy support page at http://eyetoy8057.sourceforge.net/cms/, which contained Linux drivers, is no longer active and the drivers are not available.

The camera was made by Logitech as a "Logicool" camera and a "Quick-Cam tor Note book"

This site list this driver: spca5xx/LE gspca v4l1/v4l2
The download site is here, but the drivers haven't been updated in 3 years, so I wouldn't expect anything from them.

What I would do is use the uvcvideo module:

        sudo modprobe uvcvideo

Then install cheese and guvcvideo from the repository and use them to try the camera.

        Good luck!

          Re: Webcam question

Interesting result. If I started skype while cheese was running, the colors were normal; if I start skype first, the colors are messed up. However, regardless of what settings I messed with, the image was flipped left to right. Not nearly as big a deal as the color thing though, thanks for the help.

Also, it is no longer recognized as a microphone.

              Re: Webcam question

Trying the uvcview module was the first choice. There are many gspca modules you can try. begin by trying those that are closest to the spca5xx driver.

              First rmmod the previous module:
              sudo rmmod uvcview
              then install another
              sudo modprobe gspca_spca500
(the gspca series will also load the gspca_main module)

Test it with cheese and guvcview. BTW, guvcview has "mirror" and "Invert" controls. I've found that flipping the video with those controls, quitting guvcview and running Skype does, on some hardware, allow the flipping the remain, giving Skype a normal appearance.

The microphone issue was my fault, some settings got changed when I upgraded to Maverick.

This issue has now been resolved to my satisfaction, thank you very much for your assistance.

At present, I start cheese, then start the skype video, then exit cheese. The result is a correctly colored but still mirrored image.
