Drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon X2500 (X1600)?

Hi,

Any ideas how to install open source drivers for my graphics card that's ATI Mobility Radeon x2500 ( just renamed x1600)?

I have made a clean Kubuntu 10.04 install and my graphics card isn't working always correctly. I found some guide how to install open source drivers manually, but the problem is that I can't find xorg.conf file at /etc/X11

I think clean install makes Kubuntu to use the closed drivers, but as I said they are not working every time. Also how can I check which drivers I'm currently using?

Thanks for the link to Lucid Lynx wiki. I have been reading the Jaunty page, but I have missed that LL page. I haven't been successful yet with my graphics card, but I'll keep on trying.

Can anyone tell me why I don't have the xorg.conf in /etc/X11 folder? I have made a clean Install of K 10.04, so I think it should be there... or should it be?

Hi Tim...

If I remember correctly, the newer versions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu don't come with an xorg.conf file, unless a driver or program creates one, as in my case. We dealt with this same problem over here. Perhaps some of the information can be of help.

Well, I tried to solve this problem with my friend today. The open source drivers won't solve my problem, because they don't even work (at this time) as well as ATI's closed drivers. And because ATI isn't supporting anymore my old graphics card on Linux, I'll have to do a dual boot to my computer. In windows my GPU and its drivers are working perfectly.

When you say that the drivers aren't working, do you mean that there is no direct rendering (3D acceleration,) or do you mean you get no video at all, just a command prompt?

Also, is the ATI GPU integrated or is attached to a card that connects to the motherboard via AGP/PCI/PCI-E slot?

Hi,

I think it's wrong to say that they are not working. They work at some point and 3D acceleration works. The problem seems to be with the shaders. For normal use they work well, but on some occasions I get error messages that's related to shaders. Also GPU isn't integrated. I also thought of changing it, but I guess in that case it would be easier to just buy a new laptop

Hi...

So you are using a laptop? If so, then your GPU is integrated unless there is technology out there that I haven't kept up on.

sudo Xorg -configure

It will create an xorg.conf.new file in your home directory. You need to move that to /etc after you've modified it to use your proper drivers.

copy this file to /etc/X11/ directory. If there is no other problem, it will enable OpenGL rendering, etc. I hope it will work.

You really don't need a xorg.conf, unless the driver is not loading. In the OP's case it is. The problem seems to be in limitations of the driver. Switch to Gallium3D.
