Compaq CQ61-411wm freezes on acpi event

I just install ubuntu (since kubuntu didn't want to work off live usb, possibly because of this issue). on a Compaq CQ61-411wm. and there seams to be problems with acpi on this machine, when ever the laptop is plugged in it works perfectly, if you unplug it or try to change the screen brightness the machine locks up hard (no tty;s no resiub). if you run the machine unpluged it works untill gdm starts up. im currently installing kubuntu-desktop on the machine and have replaced gdm with kdm . any ideas why this is happening? below is the lshw output of the machine of any more info is needed let me know.

Edit:it seams right before kde login that kde does something to acpi, because it freezes there too.

Re: Compaq CQ61-411wm freezes on acpi event

I'd chalk it up to one of two things:

    1) Compaq BIOS (they used to be execedingly proprietary, which is why I've never liked Compaq PCs)
    2) It's a Compaq (see above)

Okay. Not helpful. But it likely is a BIOS issue.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

well thats is one possibility.. but i was hoping there was some other stuff i can try to get this working right.

edit: playing around w/ desktop's it apears lxde works correctly even runs unpluged or when the powerstate changes.

Re: Compaq CQ61-411wm freezes on acpi event

this is NOT a bios issue the machine works correctly with acpi events in debian (lenny) and dream linux (lenny based). this seams to be a *buntu related issue since it works on two other debian based distros.

UPDATE: the packages for debian work and i now know why, there is an issue using the firmware provided from ati as a binary blob. (debian by default does not install non free stuff.) i found this out while trying to get proper video support in order to enable desktop effects. i had installed the package thinking oh well it needs at least the firmware? and the boot after that it locked up just as ever ububnutu distro i tried did. so i removed the package and it worked again. im not sure if this is a bug that can be fixed since its in a binary blob. (and prolly does also have something to do w/ the custom bios hp/compaq uses on the video card).

Another Update: Maverick works perfectly out of the box, acpi, video and all !
