    Can't get audio CDs to play!

    Ref: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...4495#msg234495

    Didn't solve anything for me! I can't get an audio CD to play to save my life!

    I've tried kmplayer, vlc, amarok, KsCD, all to no avail. Prior ro upgrading to lucid I never had a problem. I can also play files off the hard drive. What package could I possibly be missing?

    Can't read Audio CD or play Music

    Hi,

    Since upgrading to Lucid I can no longer read audio CDs or play music files.

    In "System Setting" the audio setting for "default"doesn't work either, I have to set it to Intel HDA (0,0) something, then it plays the test sound.

    If I select a .wav file and try to play with Amarok, it just crashes.

    If I select to same file with VLC, it "pretends" to play (the time marker moves like it's playing), but no sound. I did go into the preferences and set the output to ALSA, Intel (0,0)

    Now I can't even open "System Settings" anymore, so some configuration is way out of line.

    How to I reset my audio configuration?

    Thanks,

      Re: Can't read Audio CD or play Music

      Well, I rebooted my machine and now I can play music files with VLC. Amarok still crashes, so I ditched it.

      I still can't play an audio CD. VLC can't even find a song. Kaffine "thinks" it's playing, it even shows the song title, but no sound.

      I had an issue many years ago with a missing package, but I can't remember what it was. I think I have everything installed. Any ideas?

      Thanks

        Hello plm99,

        Do you get any error messages or so? Can you open the CD with Dolphin?

        Greetings

          I always go back to the classic guidance here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

          Also, if it's a laptop with an Intel HDA/STAC chip, then you should review this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...sound+database

          And lmilano wrote some decent Phonon/Pulseaudio guidance here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3108441.0

            Greetings
            When I try to open the CD with Dolphin, here's what happened:
            <start>
            File reading failed:
            VLC could not open the file "audiocd:/01%20-%20You%20Can%20All%20Join%20In.wav".
            Your input can't be opened:
            VLC is unable to open the MRL 'audiocd:/01%20-%20You%20Can%20All%20Join%20In.wav'. Check the log for details.
            <end>

            Dolphin reads the CD, applies the song titles to the list of songs, everything looks just dandy, until I click on it and VLC crashes.

            Work my way down the list:

            Alsa player copies the song to the hard drive, then "pretend" to play (no sound comes out).

            Kaffine spits out the following error: Cannot find input plugin for MRL "audiocd:/05%20-%20Feelin'%20Alright%3F.wav".

            If I try to play the Audio CD directly from Kaffine it looks like it's playing. I'll bet it wold work if thay hadn't dumbed down the setting to the point that I can't over ride "default"

            Kplayer: also copies the file (or appears to) and pretend to be play, with the counter moving erratically until it crashes

            KMPlayer give me this:
            MPlayer SVN-r1.0~rc3+svn20090426-4.4.3 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
            Terminal type `unknown' is not defined.

            Exiting... (End of file)
            ID_EXIT=EOF

            Then switch KMplayer to use phonon instead of Mplayer, I get this:
            register as org.kde.kphononplayer-2482
            newStream xembed cont: 73429436

            If I try to play with Audacity, it loads the file onto the HDD again, and appears ready to edit the file. At least with Audacity I can go into "preferences" and set the output to "HDA Intel STAC92xx Analog (hw:0,0)", now I get sound! (VLC is also set that way, and can play a WAV file from the HDD, just not from the disc).

            It seems that my problem (one of them) is "default" is wrong. How do I change what "default" point to?

            Thanks,

                I'm waaay past that. I've had Mediabuntu in my repository for many years. It something to do with this Intel Motherboard, I'm pretty sure. I must be missing a hardware driver or something, I just can't figure out what's missing.

                  Re: Can't get audio CDs to play!

                  I pretty convinced that there is a driver issue since upgrading Ubuntu. I can read data files from a CD, just not audio CD files. I can see them in Dolphin, but can't even copy the audio tracks from the disc, much less play them.

                    Re: Can't get audio CDs to play!

                    Sound Juicer works! I extracted an audio file from a CD quickly and easily with it.

                    BTW, I added an external DVD drive via USB, it has the same issues, and not even Dolphin can read it. Sound Juicer can read the external drive.

                    I think I've narrowed down the problem quite a lot.

                    The problem must be with KDE, as Sound Juicer is a GNOME app.

                    ...but I still can play an audio CD. At least I can rip again.
