HP EliteBook 8440p - Black Screen

My EliteBook 8440p is a base model with the intel i5 2.4Ghz processor and Intel GMA HD gpu. Screen resolution is 1366x768

When I booted the Live CD I kept getting a black screen, I had to resort to the text installer. After instillation, upon bootup I still get a black screen, recovery mode doesn't work either. I attempting pressing e and adding -vesa at the end of the kernel but that didnt fix the problem either.

The screen is completely black but the backight is on.

I am absolutely baffled and any help would be appreciated. I've been searching google and various forums for hours.

This is a known (but not really resolved) problem. It is discussed on Launchpad. PLEASE subscribe to this bug, because the more people who verify that the bug exists, the more likely it is that someone will make an effort to resolve it.

Now that is just ANNOYING. Is it not resolved in the nightly builds of Kubuntu 10.10?

Actually the bug has been resolved upstream as of July 28. You can try to fix it yourself from the instructions there, or wait for the solution to trickle down. That will probably take "a while", but the duration of the "while" is entirely up to the schedules of the several layers of (mostly unpaid volunteer) individuals involved. My guess would be two or three weeks (+/- 100%).

Of course, if this were happening in the high priced OS, you'd have to wait for their paid staff to get clearance to work on it, their paid managers to decide that it wasn't bad PR to acknowledge the existence of the bug, their paid publicists to write the release notes, etc. And then, you might have to buy the next version of windoze to get the fix.
