As indicated in one of the posts you could check add this line to add the line options snd-hda-intel model=dell-eq to alsa-base.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/.

I tried this one.

As for removing alsa and pulse, I cannot be sure that doing either will work for you as you may well find that something else won't work then - most likely your USB speakers will stop working if you remove pulse.

I suspect that this is something that will be made to work, but in time. Did you get anywhere with Dell, although I suspect they've never sold that model with a linux option?

So far no luck with Dell. And yes, it is not available with Linux pre-loaded.

Here are a few random-at-you-own-risk ideas:

Some people used to suggest that removing Pulse was a good idea. Perhaps it is now.
If you want a clean install of ALSA here is a script for that:
http://www.stchman.com/tools/alsa/alsa_setup.sh
This will download and compile modules and reboot etc.
Run it like this: sudo ./alsa_setup.sh

OK, so far no change.

Also this file is interesting: /home/you/.asoundrc.asoundconf
So is this one because it lists all the hardware like headphones:
/proc/asound/card0/yourcard (if this is card0)
That file really does look like it could tell a lot.

I don't know about Pulse drivers though (if there is such a thing)

To be honest I haven't been able to get much out of these files. At the same time, I am not sure if anything like this would help. I probably don't understand this at all, but isn't the soundcard separate from the speakers and/or headphones? I mean the soundcard produces some output and then it goes to one of the speakers (meaning that the headphone is like a line out speaker). Am I totally confused?

That I how I assumed at the beginning of this thread that the problem would be in the analogue part (such as the switching jack), but you claim that it works in Windows so that is obviously not the case here. The electrical outputs to the headphone and speaker are completely separate meaning that there is some control possible in the software. However, any confusion is more likely to be on my part.

That last file I mentioned, seems to list the capabilities of the card and driver. That to me would indicate that if something is listed as present (ie headphone) then there should be a way to turn it on.

Sorry, if I'm rambling. I don't have your much needed answer. I'm just trying to inspire some eurika moment on your end.

No need for apologies, I appreciate any ideas. It's only that I will probably need mor etime to figure out what those files are telling me, but the idea is certainly good.

And yes, the USB headphone is a good idea and I will try that. (Except of course that I have a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones that I've been using on long flight...) Well, it's not the end of the world.

ps: and I think you are right that the issue is somewhere in the card. I just don't have much experience dealing with sound problems. So far it always worked out of the box....

Yessssssssss!!! It works.
So the solution is:

add “options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6” to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

[Just for completeness: after adding that line and rebooting, in alsamixer a new "Headphone 2" appeared and unmuting it's volume did the trick.]
