KDS Monitor / "RV530LE [Radeon X1600]" graphics card - high resolution problems

I recently purchased a used machine that appears to have a RV530LE graphics card in it. I also have a KDS Monitor. At resolution 1280x1024 (Auto/75.0Hz) I can expect the display to start waving, moving sine wave about a centimeter most noticeable along windows borders.

When I go into KDE's "System Settings" -> "Computer Administration" -> "Display" -> "Size & Orientation", looking under VGA-0 (Connected) I see size (refresh) as follows: 720x400(Auto/70.1Hz), 640x480(Auto/60Hz/85.0Hz), 800x600(Auto/60.3Hz/75.0Hz/85.1Hz/100Hz), 1024x768(Auto/60Hz/75.1Hz/85.0Hz), 1280x1024 (Auto/75.0Hz) and lastly Disabled.

When I set the display at the highest 1280x1024 (Auto/75.0Hz), after a period of time the edges of the display windows have the appearance of waves. Also when shut down the setting is not retained, requiring that the display be reset to the 1280x1024 (Auto/75.0Hz). Lastly after using the high resolution setting, occasionally when the machine is restarted it comes up with a white screen. Neither waves or white screen occur at the 1024x768(Auto/60Hz/75.1Hz/85.0Hz) or lower resolutions.

On my other machine using the same monitor I thought I had more video SVGA resolution options / frequencies to choose from, believe that was an NVIDIA card. I assume that I may be missing a driver or two or picked the wrong ones. If my problem was hardware failure I would expect display symptoms to appear with all settings.

Thanks for any assistance, this large screen is irritating,
    Scott

Re: KDS Monitor / "RV530LE [Radeon X1600]" graphics card - high resolution problems

I am assuming that your KDS monitor is a CRT (ie not an LCD screen)?

If so, "wavy lines" are often a symptom of the refresh rate of your monitor being set higher than it is capable of (possibly with LCDs as well, but haven't encountered it). If you still have your old system (the one you mention with the Nvidia card) hook it back up to that, open your display settings, and see what refresh rate is being used. Assuming you don't get the "wavy lines" with that particular refresh rate on that particular machine, change the refresh rate on your recently purchased machine (System Settings -> Display).

If you don't have your old machine, try to google the specs of make and model # to find its supported resolutions and refresh rates and change them accordingly.

Monitors have EDID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extende...ification_data) chips in them that are supposed to prevent erroneous settings by the Operating System that could damage the monitor or create a poor visual experience. However, they are not perfect, and my 1680x1050 LCD tends to get it's EDID chip wiped if the power goes out on me and then I need to reprogram it (not an easy thing to figure out, but saves a trip to the repair shop ).

    Hope that helps
    Cheers

      Thanks for your response,

Yes, the monitor is a CRT.

I thought that it was a refresh problem also however the Kubuntu/ATI driver settings seem to be restricted to only Auto/75.0Hz for the 1280x1024 in "System Settings" -> "Computer Administration" -> "Display" -> "Size & Orientation".

Now I may not have installed the correct drivers from the repository or for some reason after installed they did not change the settings allowing an expanded range - before and after in the "System Settings" did not "appear" to change.

      Unfortunately my old machine died.

      Thanks again for the assistance,
      Scott M.

        http://www.kdsusa.com/XF9s.asp
        http://www.superwarehouse.com/KDS_Xt...F-9I/ps/300407

Found the specifications for my CRT KDS XF-9i I believe.
        1280x1024 / 85Hz
        1600x1200 / 65Hz

Kubuntu in the Settings - Computer Administration - Display - Size & Orientation show the following:
        1280x1024 / 75Hz
1600x1200 - this resolution is not displayed.

Maybe the monitors EDID is bad.....
Also notice that video is quirky, trying to run Microsoft games in VirtualBox and FreeDoom freezes

Glad that I use this Kubuntu machine mostly for Internet, email and maintaining some familiarity with Linux....

In your case, you should have an xorg.conf file on your system. Post it for a review.

Do not have a "xorg.conf". Have "/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d" which contains the following files:
            file:///usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf
            file:///usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf
            file:///usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-vmmouse.conf
            file:///usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-wacom.conf

            file:///usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.xml
            file:///usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst
            file:///var/lib/dpkg/info/xorg.list
            file:///usr/share/kde4/apps/katepart/syntax/xorg.xml

Thanks for the suggestion, should I post one or more of those files ?

Hey folks, any idea why I do not have an "xorg.conf" file, but have this directory (/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/) ? This is a new installation on a new/used machine:

              Kubuntu
              Distributor ID: Ubuntu
              Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
              Release: 10.04
              Codename: lucid

So if this is an evolution then what should I look at changing to resolve/tweak this issue, in place of the "xorg.conf" file ? Is there an additional package that would identify the monitor ? This is a legacy monitor such that there should not be an issue with this irritating problem and the monitor did run fine with a much older machine and earlier version of Kubuntu.

Think I found the problem, I do not have "xorg.conf" in /etc/X11, have "xorg.conf.failsafe", would this be solved by creating an xorg.conf file....?

                    Hi,

I am using Radeon X1600 PRO on one of my machines (with Kubuntu Lucid), and here is my xorg.conf (please ignore the commented lines, and set monitor identifier to your own. You might also want to uncomment other "Monitor" specs and play with those values. I don't use them because my monitor is automatically configured without any problem):

This was basically a clean used machine, that I purchased, wiped XP and put Kubuntu on it, so "xorg.conf" should have existed.

grep found a reference to the file in "/etc/init/kdm.conf" (XORGCONFIG) and a reference to it in a binary "dev/sdf2".... echo $XORGCONFIG results in a blank line.

Okay I added the "xorg.conf" since it did not exist, believing that the "failsafe" was being used.
So why wouldnt the addition of the file result in a changed environment (for better or worse) ?

The large monitor is getting annoying.....

                        TIA

                        Hey folks,

Any ideas as to why the settings on the new xorg.conf are not showing up ?
At the minimum I was expecting to see the "1600x1200" value in the GUI display using the new file.

Could it be affected by GRUB2 boot up - not familiar with either GRUB's but, could that be impacting this issue ?

Even what log file to look in and what to look for would help ?

Well I found references that xorg.conf may not be used, could this explain why no changes have any effect ? https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...question/54020 that it could be part of the HAL but that appears to be input devices, mouse, keyboard....

The examples I have seen have the Mode all on one line with a depth of 24 yet the other values are missing.

                          For example...
                          Code:
                          Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
So far all my playing with xorg.conf have resulted in no apparent effect. Should I be looking elsewhere, HAL, Radeon driver settings somewhere or even locally, user account.

                          Xorg.0.log - I am confused....
                          • First Xorg.0.log is information from the driver/hardware ?
                          • Second from this I should be able to see 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 80Hz (only see 75Hz) in KDE's "Size & Orientation System Settings".
                          • Third the generated "Section "Screen"" has the "SubSection" broken out by depth.
                          • Fourth I do not have a "failsafe" mode, black screen ?

Feel like I should flip a coin or something, which flavor mode line should work.....

oblivion's example had no effect, I had no xorg.conf file before applying his example, I am concerned both ways, no effect or too much effect. So far it seems like I can do anything to the xorg.conf without effect one way or another.

                            A few points:
                            1. xorg.conf is no longer created by default, period. You have to create one (like you did) if your system requires it. It seems the developers of xorg think the new hardware will be detected correctly (yeah, right huh?).

                            2. I apologize if I missed it - but I don't see you referencing your xorg log file. There is where you'll find whats going on when you start X. It's located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log - might be useful to read all of it.

                            3. If all you're trying to do is set your CRT resolution and refresh rates - and EDID isn't working correctly (see your log). You need to turn EDID off, then set the correct rates and resolution:

                            Section Monitor
                            ...
                            Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
                            HorizSync 30.0 - 86.0
                            VertRefresh 65.0 - 85.0

                            Section Screen
                            ...
                            # 1280x1024 @ 65.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 69.10 kHz; pclk: 119.40 MHz
                            Modeline "1280x1024" 119.40 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1063 -HSync +Vsync
                            # 1600x1200 @ 85.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 107.10 kHz; pclk: 234.76 MHz

                            SubSection "Display"
                            Depth 24
                            Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
                            EndSubSection

Try these edits... I'm sure there's more you'll need but I'm not an ATI guy...

Thanks oshunluvr, it had an effect. It blanked out the monitor on one occasion, the rest of the time the monitor was disconnected, had no signal. The "modeline" caused these effects. First time I applied the changes to the generated xorg.conf. Second attempt I tried them using oblivion's xorg.conf same effect.

After an event I booted to recover mode and noticed that the Xorg.0.log file was empty. After resetting the xorg.conf I notice that there are no errors in the log file.

Here is the current xorg.conf file that gives the same resolutions as before with changes applied and commented out lines with "detrimental" effects:

Thanks for the ideas, at least now I know that making changes to this file has an effect. Days, weeks, months like this make one regret loyalty to Linux. I really should be doing real work.

                              Any suggestions.........

                              Thanks again for the help.
